holiday tipping ugh!

holiday tipping ugh!

DH and I moved into a doorman building this past March. We love living here, but yesterday we got our building employee list. There are 22 people on it!! Last year we only had 1 super to tip and now we have 22 people, most who I don't even know. I can't even imagine how much money this is going to be! ughh

You don't have to tip all of them. We have a lot of maintenance people for our complex and we only tip about 2 of them since they are the ones that help us directly.

The list does seem a little weird though! It's like 'thanks for paying all your rent for those months, now here's a list of people you should tip and give more money to this apartment building'.

I'd tip (give cash) to the doorman and any person you actually have met and has done something for you. If you have never seen them and you don't think they did anything directly for you, I would just make a bunch of cookies or candies and give them each a small box or tray of those in a tin or plate or something like that. i highly doubt you need, or should give, cash to all 22 people.

thanks for the input ladies.

and it's so weird, because they included the titles. so no only does our building have doormen, supers and porters, but we apparently have concierges and lounge attendants. seriously??!!

DH is a doorman so we LOVE this time of year lol Coming from experience, cash is MUCH better than a check or gift cards.

yeah, we're def giving cash. i just wish i knew all these people, because i'd love to hand them the gift myself. we'll probably just have to give a big box of all the envelopes to the super.

In my old building they gave us a list too with the titles. I love how they disguised it as a holiday card.

yes, i tipped each person. I gave the doormen and supers the most. If i could not place the face to the name i was not as generous. i remember there was one porter who sometimes acted as doorman if they needed a fill in and he was always really helpful so I would give him more.

It was such a fortune.but they were all extra nice to me after that. Once, my super saw me struggling with a bunch of things and i said i was heading to lirr to go home for weekend, and he decided he would drive me to penn station,. (he actually offered to drive me to LI, but thats too weird).

My last building did this but mine was disguised more as a holiday card too, yours was more of a tip list!

We only gave to the doormen and porters we saw and knew by face; to those guys, we were generous. I didn't think it was worth it for me to put extra tip in an envelope for someone I didn't know.

One of the perks of living in a non-doorman building is only having to tip my super!

That's definitely true - DH told me that the tenants that don't tip at all or are super cheap don't get as good service as the others. The guys will take their time getting up to their apartments to help with things or not help with bags or things like that.
