Holiday Traditions

While the boards seem a lil slow I thought I would post to see what your favorite holiday traditions are with your immediate family and which of those traditions do you want to continue with FH and your future children

Also, any new traditions that you and FH are going to create together for your family?

I LOVE THANKSGIVING AND CHRISTMAS AND I CANNOT WAIT TO DECORATE!

My moms side of the family.. ( the italian, and very big and loud side) has a huge christmas eve party every year and we all get one gift from 'Santa' that we can open. I love it. I want to continue that with our kids.

Re: Holiday Traditions

I have a ton of traditions that my Mommy started with my sister and I and I plan to continue them with FH:

1. A small Christmas ornament or decoration given on Thanksgiving Morning while watching the Macy's parade! This was always a really special thing for me and my sister it meant that the next day we got to decorate the house for Christmas and it really kicked off the Christmas Season for us!

2. Having a REAL Christmas Tree!

3. Giving my children Christmas pajamas and letting them open them under the tree on Christmas Eve night after Christmas Eve Mass!! That way they have nice pjs to wear Christmas Morning!

4. Going buck wild with Christmas decorations..literally it looks like our house is a Christmas Shop! FH and I love it!

5. I am going to try to see if we can continue my Mom's tradition of making Lamb on Christmas for dinner!!

These are just a few. Christmas is a really special time for my family and my Mommy has made it that way for us. I pray I can do the same for our Children!

Re: Holiday Traditions

I LOVE all holidays. My favorite 3 are Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

Halloween, we always go pumpkin picking, Hcks Nursery for the giant pumpkin contest. And this year for the first time we did the Twilight Pumpkin thing which was awesome. I plan on doing these activities with my kids. I can't wait to dress them up in costumes and go trick or treating!

Then Thanksgiving is just the usual- dinner with the family. I just love when the family is together. It's so nice.

Christmas there are way too many traditions. Watching movies all month long. Going to EAB plaza. Going to HIcks to see the decorations. Eve is at my house and Day is at FH's Mom's house. We plan on taking the Eve over when FH and I get the house which I can't wait for!

Re: Holiday Traditions

Growing up, my immediate family (my parents and grandparents) never hosted any of the holidays. It seemed we were always going to our other family members for the holidays. When we have children I hope they get to experience holidays in the comfort of their own home, surrounded by family, at least every couple of years. My family was so small and if we didn't go anywhere for the holidays, they felt like every other day except with a bigger meal. I'd like them to experience decorating the house and a tree for Christmas, cooking a big meal for Thanksgiving, etc.

Re: Holiday Traditions

its a strange tradition... but for thanksgiving... we have a thing called, 'button time'. its the point everyone i'm sure is familiar with. when you are SO STUFFED you feel like you'll explode. so we unbutton our pants take a deep breath and have another helping. it has become quite the family joke!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it happens every year and my cousins call us now that they live far away to tell us about it!!!!

I totally forgot to add my FAVORITE tradition of the holiday season (silly me).. After thanksgiving dinner when we are all nice and stuffed my family always watches National Lampoons Christmas Vacation....That movie seems to get funnier and funnier every year!

Re: Holiday Traditions

I am the youngest of eight kids and every Christmas morning we had to wait till everyone was awake before we can go downstairs to see our presents under the tree (well really scattered around the living room, with everyone having thier own pile of gifts). My dad waited downstairs and video taped each one of us coming down in age order, so its nice to watch the video and see how everyone changed each year. Coming down in moms arms as a baby, then crawling down, then walking down etc.
This is a tradition I def want to keep with my kids.
I LOVEEEE Christmas!! And there are so many other traditions but this one sticks out the most

Re: Holiday Traditions

Lets see... This is gonna be long...

Thanksgiving we always have at our house. My dad cooks like a mad man. He's how I learned how to cook. Each year we watch foodnetwork and add a new recipe on to the year befores menu, usually theres nothing we want to replace so every year we have more food lol... Some favs are my dads apple sausage stuffing which we now make into 'stuffin muffins' thanks to Rachel Ray, pecan and marshmellow streusel stuffed sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, mashed root vegetables, stuffed mushrooms, thanksgiving salad with cranberries and goronzola cheese, my mom makes homemade rolls, skillet cornbread, and ofcourse the turkey, which he usually brines overnight, and frys except this year my dad got a smoker so hes going to fry one and smoke one... And my grandma makes the pies and they are beautiful!

Christmas, I bake for like a week and a half straight making all my 20 something recipes, Im pretty hard on myself if I don't finish before christmas I usually make the rest for our new years party... This I learned from my grandmother she bakes even more and we make none that are the same so when we exchange we have like 40 different types of cookies! FH and I have kind of started our own traditions. We visit my grandma on christmas eve at like 2PM and have fondue with them, then we go to FH father's for an italian dinner, then we go to the 11PM service and come home and exchange PJ presents. Christmas Day we have at our house also, my dad makes lots of appetizers like sausage bread, smoked salmon, shrimp taco dip, spinich dip stuff like that. And then we have a german meal with sourbrauten, potato balls and red cabbage and other stuff.

We always get a real tree, my dad puts on the lights and we all decorate.

watch lots of christmas movies =)

Drive around the LI and see the decorated houses

Go into the city to see the tree

One of my holiday traditions is giving special/personalized ornaments each year, so the kids, and our Grandson can have a beautiful collection some day. Mary MOB

Re: Holiday Traditions

I love every holiday!
I love decorating and cooking, and getting together with my large family. Tradition wise, I still get pjs from my parents Christmas Eve and I haven't lived at home for 10 years. My parents still put out cookies and milk for Santa. Our stocking presents were always the most fun, and the pets have stockings too. We always cut down a live tree.
Traditions I want to do with fh: each buy an ornament that means something to that person, do volunteer work at some point over the season (we do the Polar Bear Plunge in Southampton), and I want to host a cookie exchange. My mom and her friends always do that.
Also, one of my ex co workers told me every Christmas Eve after her kids were asleep, her and dh under the Christmas tree!
