Re: HOLY CRAP! THERE WAS AN EXPLOSION
One of the department chairs here just had his wife call him this morning. She was passing by the building when it exploded. She said you could smell gas all the way down the street and they think that sparked the explosion, but that it was set by a suicide attempt as many of you have already posted about.

Re: HOLY CRAP! THERE WAS AN EXPLOSION
From NY1 News:
A doctor who police say was the lone occupant of the Upper East Side building that exploded and collapsed Monday morning has reportedly been pulled from the rubble and is in critical condition.
The four-story building, on 62nd Street between Park and Madison avenues, collapsed in a plume of smoke following an explosion shortly before 9 a.m. this morning.
In addition to the doctor, who police say was the building's owner, the injured include four passers-by and three firefighters who were fighting the blaze. One of the injured, a young woman who was covered in blood, was pulled from the rubble and taken to the hospital.
Fire officials say they believe the explosion was the result of a gas leak. A Con Ed truck was reportedly on the scene investigating the leak at the time of the explosion.
Meanwhile, officials are investigating whether the doctor, who was reportedly going through a divorce, could have been suicidal.
Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta says there are reports that an e-mail recently sent by the doctor suggested that he was contemplating suicide.
Early reports also suggest that the doctor might have been the owner of the building and was looking to sell it.
The doctor was somehow able to report his whereabouts by phone, and firefighters were then able to pull him to safety. He was taken to an area hospital with severe burns.
Firefighters remain on the scene of the building collapse, but the fire appears to be under control and the plume of smoke that was visible for several blocks following the explosion has dissipated.
The landmark brownstone building had three or four stories with the doctors' office on the first floor and residences on the others.
There were some questions as to whether terrorism could possibly be to blame for the explosion, particularly for witnesses who lived through September 11th and for whom the plume of smoke is all too reminiscent of that day, but the White House has issued a statement saying that terrorism is not involved.
Subway service in the area has not been affected, but bus service is being diverted. The M1, M2, M3, M4, M30, M66 and M72 are all being routed to Third Avenue between 56th and 65th Streets.
Motorists are being advised to steer clear of the Upper East Side.

Re: HOLY CRAP! THERE WAS AN EXPLOSION
The news is sensationalizing this, making it sound like it was his fault already, without proof. It's all speculation until they do a fire investigation or he admits to it. Just because he was suicidal doesn't mean he would take out his whole building.
I'm reading some of the articles and the people in the area thought it might be another terrorist attack. My God, can you imagine having to go through feeling that way again?

Unfortunately, there is no sensationalizing going on..these are the facts. I just got a phone call from a detective who is investigating this as well. If there were emails of him being suicidal, and the divorce wasn't a secret, I dont' see how there is no proof. He had no regard for anyone but himself, and could have hurt alot more people. Instead, now he's laying in a hospital, unsuccessfully attempting suicide and there are people without jobs, people hurt, and the city is shook up ONCE again. This really upsets me because if you want to go..go..don't try to take others with you.

Re: HOLY CRAP! THERE WAS AN EXPLOSION
DO you really think it was suicide attempt? Aren't there so many quicker & easier ways to do it...don't you think that would be a horrible way to go? I dont get it?

Re: HOLY CRAP! THERE WAS AN EXPLOSION
Maybe it really was a gas leak or maybe the wife thought she was going to get nothing and she cuased the explosion. I think its too early to tell.

That was exactly my point; not just going along with popular opinion. By proof I mean real physical evidence from the fire investigation. Fingerprints, DNA, whatever. Besides a confession (which hasn't been given AFAIK), there's nothing they've found yet that definitively marks him as the cause of this.
Sure, it looks really bad. But that alone doesn't make him guilty. I'm not saying he's innocent, I'm just saying that the media likes to jump to conclusions to draw people in. I'm don't buy it till the proof and conclusion comes from a reliable source.
That said, the Fire Marshall is calling it intentional and said they found some kind of a release valve in the gas line.
