Is your heat electric? Have you been doing renovations to your home (running saws, extra lights, etc)? Maybe have more lights on? Is something on that you dont know about? New electronics and applicances are usually pretty energy efficient.

Ours is around $150 every 2 months.

The first full month we moved in we paid $600!!! Yes, you read correctly. That is why I am sitting here freezing now. We are waiting to see what the next bill will be.

Our new bill came it was over $300! But when we looked at the dates it was through Christmas time, so we figured it was the measely Christmas lights and one snow family we had on the lawn. But who knows! LIPA is just outrageous IMO

I'm on balanced billing and we just had an increase to $240 per month, this jumped from $168. What the heck is going on?!! It should be a 'right' to have heat and lights, we pay enough to live on LI!!!

lipa estimates each month how much energy you use and then every so often will actually come and read the meter. if there guesstimation is wrong, we get a higher bill. totally s u c k s!! we called them about our bills and this is what they told us.

I agree with the above person. Check you bill to see if it's an estimate! They do this some months when they don't come out and read your meter.

I would imagine it's your heat that's bringing the cost up. Were you running any AC units or central air when it was only $70?

We are not on balanced billing and they do the estimations. However my DH checks the meter after we get a bill and if there estimates are REALLY off, he will call and they adjust the bill! BUt either way it works out, our LIPA bill in January was $29 because we had overpaid previously!

We are $80-120 for a one bedroom condo. I can't believe $70 for a house! We have a HUGE TV though (two tvs) and I run the washer and dryer pretty frequently...

we have a 1 bedroom apartment and our lipa bill is 40 in winter and 76 80 in the summer. I scared to see what happens when we get into our house.

My bill is always wacky too! One month it's low, and the next month it's extremely high. I called LIPA to ask them about this. They said that the meter at your house is read every other month. They guess what your reading will be the next month. Sometimes when their guess is under, they bang you over the head with the next bill. I was told that we could read the meter ourselves and call it in so that won't happen.

We pay the same as Mel in our apartment. I am going to reasearch the 'budget' plans offered by LIPA. The owner of the house we're buying only pays $155 a month on a budget, so that doesn't seem that bad.
