I've been in my house about 2 months and it's about time to get a phone. Who is everyone using for local and long distance? And if you don't mind, how much are you paying per month?

Now I'm confused. We have cordless phones, but it sounds like we wouldn't be able to use the current jacks? Is that what you mean? How much did they charge you to wire in jacks? Did you have to buy the phones from them?
you cannot use a regular phone jack, the phone must be connected to your cable modem. not sure if cablevision provides phones, but we bought wireless cordless phones from radio shack. one is hooked up to the modem in the computer room and the other is downstairs in the kitchen. the one in the kitchen does not plug into a jack, it is somehow connected to the phone upstairs phone via wireless technology.
ETA: i think the wireless phones (2) were $99. although the main phone has a digital answering machine and both have caller ID, IMO they are total crap. we have to keep them charged almost all the time. if it is left off the hook for more then a couple hours, the battery dies. we also can't be on both phones at the same time. i.e. someone calls for me, DH answers, i have to use the phone that he picked up on. not sure if this is because the phones are a shi**y or it has something to do w/ the wireless.
i know there are other brands of wireless phones, so i would check them out before buying the radio shack ones
We spent a little more on the phones to get better ones....we have the same set up, the main 'base' with the cable modem, then the two other handsets in other rooms in the house which only have to be plugged in for power. They have a wireless connection to the base. We got the phones from I think staples but they pretty much sell them anywhere you can buy phones. If you need more than 2 or 3 you can typically just by more handsets. The charge on ours lasts a bit longer - they are AT&T 5.8 gHz. I dont remember how much cablevision was going to charge us to wire up the house but it was just cheaper to buy the phones and use those instead.
Do you use your computer modem or get a separate modem? I woudl want a 2nd one since I turn my computer modem off when I'm not online.
The cable modem connection is separate from the computer (there is an ethernet modem that if you don't already have you must install inside your computer). This modem is connected to the computer (for internet) and the outlet (for power), and the telephone jack. What we did was hook the power source for the modem & telephones up to a separate power strip than one for the computer (and all its 2000 parts ). You can turn off the computer power strip, and the phone will still work.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

Re: Home Phone Service
I dunno power and cable do go out, and I want to be able to make calls in an emergency.
Am I the only one that has a landline, corded phone next to her bed? This was the first hing I bought when we moved into our new house. (that and new toilet seats! )
During the blackout last year, my DH's normally intelligent friend called us after and said it was horrible not being able to call anyone what with the phone service being out. I was like HUH? Get a 'normal' phone! The electric was out not the phone!

Re: Home Phone Service
we can plug any phone into any jack in the house and it works. we have 10 jacks in the house and anyone works. when cablevision came to the house we had them test the jacks and if they dont work they will wire it for you.

Re: Home Phone Service
Go with the Optimum Voice - I've had it for over a year now. I think they are running specials now where it may be $30/month for your first year. They are trying to take business from Verizon, so if you tell Cablevision, that they'll be extra helpful in getting you setup.

My DH works for Cablevision. We have Optimum Voice you can not have it with out the cable modem. It is 34.95 a month. If your power goes out yes you do lose power but that is why we have cell phones. There is a way to look up your phone calls online. I love it the service never had a problem and now we get it for free along with our Tv service (everychannel you can think of) and out cable modem.

Re: Home Phone Service
Thanks for all the advice. It sounds like a great thing, but we just realized you have to have a computer. Right now, we don't have one so we can't get this service. I guess I have to try some other company and pay a lot more. Thanks!

We are using cablevision for phone service. It is really a good deal. It is $34.95 per month and it includes all local and long distance. Plus you don't get taxed so the bill really is $34.95.
That's what we have too!
i didn't know about this....we might do this now too!
