Home Phone Service

I've been in my house about 2 months and it's about time to get a phone. Who is everyone using for local and long distance? And if you don't mind, how much are you paying per month?

Re: Home Phone Service

We are using cablevision for phone service. It is really a good deal. It is $34.95 per month and it includes all local and long distance. Plus you don't get taxed so the bill really is $34.95.

Re: Home Phone Service

Cablevision sounds like a good deal. We don't have a computer yet, so we can't set up all three together. Do you know if there is a set up fee or anything additional that we should know about? For those of you that have it, has the bill ever gone above $34.95 (without tax)?

Re: Home Phone Service

We use AT&T for basic service and pay about $42 a month. We don't have long distance since we really don't make many LD calls. We have our cell phones for that, and we also have a calling card with like 500 minutes on it in case we need LD.

Re: Home Phone Service

we have cablevision too. Bill has never gone above 34.95/mo. Only thing is we had to buy cordless phones since the line comes in through the cable line, not the phone line. So you CANT just plug your phones into the existing jacks in the house. You can have cablevision wire in jacks but they charge you extra for this. I think we got the base and 2 handset phones for about $200.

Re: Home Phone Service

isn't the problem with CABLEVISION that if your cable goes out or your power you have no land line? i could be wrong!

yes, but even w/ a landline you can't use the phone if the power goes out (assuming you have cordless phones). it is rare that we lose service (cable or power) so i really wouldn't base your decision on this. i guess you could always keep the basic service w/ your landline carrier and have a non-cordless (what do you even call these - LOL) to use if the power goes out.

Now I'm confused. We have cordless phones, but it sounds like we wouldn't be able to use the current jacks? Is that what you mean? How much did they charge you to wire in jacks? Did you have to buy the phones from them?

Or you can buy a back up generator. We just moved to a pretty wooded area and hooked up our phone thru cable as well. We will probably buy a generator just to be able to keep the necessities going in the event of a blackout.

you cannot use a regular phone jack, the phone must be connected to your cable modem. not sure if cablevision provides phones, but we bought wireless cordless phones from radio shack. one is hooked up to the modem in the computer room and the other is downstairs in the kitchen. the one in the kitchen does not plug into a jack, it is somehow connected to the phone upstairs phone via wireless technology.

ETA: i think the wireless phones (2) were $99. although the main phone has a digital answering machine and both have caller ID, IMO they are total crap. we have to keep them charged almost all the time. if it is left off the hook for more then a couple hours, the battery dies. we also can't be on both phones at the same time. i.e. someone calls for me, DH answers, i have to use the phone that he picked up on. not sure if this is because the phones are a shi**y or it has something to do w/ the wireless.

i know there are other brands of wireless phones, so i would check them out before buying the radio shack ones

Re: Home Phone Service

We have the same thing (cablevision phone service triple play). I bought the cordless phones also, where one is plugged into the phone jack and computer, and the other is just another handset plugged into the outlet.

We did this b/c you needed to hook up the computer by a phone jack, and did it in our new house in a bedroom that (unknowingly to me) was a separate line than the other rooms. could LIW make a dunce smiley for people like me lol.

This was the only place to hook the computer up for the time being. So the other phones jacks have no phone service (i.e. the more convenient places - Kitchen, bedroom, lol)..

We bought Uniden phones, which were more expensive (75 for base, 50 for add'l handset, for phones w/o an answering machine included) at PC Richards. So far they seem good. they are 5.8mhz (more recent ones). The battery life seems fine. I keep a handset in the kitchen and take the phone into our bedroom at night when we go to bed. The handset is always still fully charged in the morning.

PC richards also had a promotion that you could buy it on your PC richards card and can pay it off until 1/06 interest free...

OK, i hope my idiot phone/computer hook up story was helpful!!

Re: Home Phone Service

oh and DH had comment on power going out also - that we would lose phone service, etc. I reminded him we do have cell phones as a backup. hopefully those would work!

But i do like the generator suggestion as well - very smart!!

Re: Home Phone Service

The one thing about modem phone service is that you (I don't think?) get an itemized bill. Unless you feel the need to have an itemized bill it's a great idea.

Do you use your computer modem or get a separate modem? I woudl want a 2nd one since I turn my computer modem off when I'm not online.
