Homeowner first?

Re: Homeowner first?

We did the whole house search when we found out we were going to have a baby... it was terrible. We were basically living the way others had expected us to live... and we weren't happy at all. We finally decided that what we have right now is perfect. We have a 2 bedroom apt. and converted the office into Madeleine's nursery... of course the computer is still in the same room, we just bought a desk that matched her furniture... I abolutely love it.

Although she hasn't arrived yet, I think we'll manage just fine. I just can't give up my apt. right yet... We live in the Bronx and there are just so many great parks near us... and it's just so easy to hop on the subway... I just couldn't imaging moving into a house with a yard... It just seems like SO much work...

We do not own our own house now, and I have no clue when we will, nor do I care personally. We live in an apt in a 2 family house owned by his grandmother. We only have one big HUGE bedroom, which used to be 2 very small rooms, and it's working fine for us. I also grew up in an apt and lived there my whole life until I got married.

Yes, I would LOVE more space, especially closet space, and yes Gianna has taken over the house w/her stuff, but I wouldn't want it any other way.

IMO, if you spend your life waiting for the perfect moment to do anything, you'll never do it!!! You'd be surprised how you can make do with what you have!!!

Good luck!!!

This is so nice to hear because all my husband says is that we live in too small of a place to have a baby. (we live in the apartment of a house that my family owns so in essence, we *do* have a house). I agree with you too Deb...Gary's cousin once said to me if you wait till the perfect moment to have a child, you will be waiting forever because there never is a perfect moment!

Owning a home first is definitely not a requirement. I think it does help though. I got pregnant 2 months after we bought the house. Our family teases us that 'we work quick' but it just happened that way. Having the extra room is a tremendous help now since we lived in a 1 bedroom before.

As long as your child has happy parents they don't care where they live (at least until they're in school anyway). Until then enjoy what you have and save up if you can.

I couldn't agree more but I am biased since I am a homeowner. It should in NO WAY be a deciding factor in TTC, BUT it was for DH and I. We both grew up in homes and we wanted the same for our little baby. Of course it doesn't always work out that way but we were blessed in that it did. Would I have started TTC in an apt? SURE!!!!! Do I prefer living in a home with extra bedrooms and a huge backyard? ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!!!

OMG I CANNOT BELIEVE...

How many times have I posted this.....Me, hubby and darling little 6 month old Mia live in a studio, ONE ROOM apartment!!! we are fine, yes it is filled with baby stuff and she HAS taken over..but I agree having a house or an apartment does not make you a better parent.

Here's the KICKER...WE OWN a HOUSE that's right a 3 bedroom ranch in North Bellmore that we never moved into because we want a 'nicer' house and we are selling this one. That's the sacrifice we made and it is working out fine. I'll check back when she starts walking and we're still in the studio!

Kudos to you!

While I think that it would be ideal to have a home before children, only because it may be more comfortable having more space the size of one's living space is not a direct correlation to how successful anyone will be as parents.

I know plenty of people that grew up in tiny 1 bedroom apartments and they're just as well adjusted as those who grew up in larger homes.

While buying a house first and then TTC would be ideal, it's not going to happen to us. We are not going to be able to buy a house for at least another 2 years. In the mean time, I am 29... Tick, tuck, tick, tuck... the clock is ticking away, I have a plan of 2 babies, not one, two! I gotta get a move on we are going to start TTC in a few months....

As everyone else has already said, you definitely do NOT need a house in order to have a baby! My whole life I lived in an apartment, and my husband, baby and I live in a two-bedroom apt. now. Yes, there are baby things in each room, but you can make it work. For example, in the living room, I keep her toys and books in a nice wicker basket with a lid that looks great in the living room. That way, they are there, but not obviously visible. Things like that help a lot so you don't feel 'trapped' by baby things everywhere! Although, when the baby is born, you won't mind as much, because you LOVE seeing all the things for your child! Yes, I'd absolutely LOVE a house, for the space and the STORAGE!!! But, don't EVER wait for that reason!!! It will all work out!

It was great reading all your feedback. Like I said, I grew up in an apartment and I turned out fine. I think for me, I just want that house first because I didnt have it. My DH wants to wait a while before TTC anyway, and I do too. But I dont quite know if we will really have that house first, Homes are way to expensive.

Again, Thanks for the responses. I kind of feel like their should be a perfect time, and I now realize their may never be that perfect time...LOL
