Homeowners - Tipping for the Holidays ...

Original post by Cira

This is all new to me and I hope we are being generous enough with our tips. But my question to you is who do you tip and how much.

This is what we are thinking ...

Mailman: $15 - $20
Garbage man: $15 - $20
Newspaper carrier: $10

Who else are we suppose to tip and how do you make sure that your garbage man/men get their tip if you are never home in the am?

Thanks!

My DH will put out the trash on the next Monday morning (the last day of collection before Christmas) and will tape the envelope to the top of the can, and write on it 'TIP' so that they won't miss it!!

Question .. if cards are taped to the tops of garbage cans with tips in them .. what's to stop some loser from going around neighborhoods looking for this, and stealing them???

Just a thought.

As for us .. call us cheap-skates .. but no tips from us. We don't know who are mail carrier is .. we have hardly any garbage ever (maybe 2 bags each week) .. and we don't get a newspaper.

Kel, that's exactly what I was thinking-about a loser helping himself.

I just got a card a few minutes ago from the sanitation men. I guess that's my hint.

I should give them something. They never leave the cans smack in the middle of the entryway to the driveway like they do by my mom's so you can't pull right in when you get home. That drove me crazy.

Oh well. Back to wrapping.

Re: Homeowners - Tipping for the Holidays ...

Just wanted to add .. we haven't gotten any sort of card or such from our sanitation men .. and I actually think that's a bit strange. I don't want to offend anyone here .. and I'm not trying to give the impression that I think they don't work hard at a dirty job .. and of course, I'm thankful someone is doing that job .. however .. part of me feels it's a little wrong for them to be putting envelopes or 'cards' in people's mailboxes .. it's almost like they're standing there shaking a can at those they're doing it to.

On a similar subject .. I have to say, I hate when we're at a restaurant, and the server says .. 'Can I get you change?' .. I know this is me just being nit-picky .. but I always prefer when they say 'I'll be right back with your change' and they leave the ball in my court to say, 'That's okay, you're all set.'

Re: Homeowners - Tipping for the Holidays ...

my mom would either tape the tip on the can or run out in her nightgown when I was a kid...to the garbage men

thank goodness I have a community garbage can...so know one knows...but I think I will leave a small gift for my mail man - also b/c I want them to remember to hold my mail...

not sure about the paper boy..hes a nice kid...but I only get the sunday paper...and the paper just charges my CC...maybe I'll tape an envelope to my door sat night? oh wait - thats tonight!!!

The post about 'how to give garbage men the tip' made me crack up, because I was thinking the same thing. Just the other day I recieved a not in my mailbox from the Sanatation dept. with the truck that picks up my garbage & the drivers name. I plan on leaving $20 in a card with a big red bow on top of the can on Monday morning. Our guys come around 7am, so I could even be out there to meet them. Mail lady will get $10, since we only been there for 2 months and all we get is everyone else on the blocks mail. It drives me crazy. News paper boy gets $10, because I only get the weekend paper. I picked up money cards from the $1 store for all these people.

At last I found a kindred spirit. It's one of those little things that drive me crazy, too. I used to waitress and I appreciate how hard the job is-I have the utmost admiration for them. However, when I give the waitress a fifty for a $33 bill and she asks if we need change I feel like screaming.

I completely feel the same way.

On the other side of the coin, during one of the snow storms we had this year, I ordered a pizza because I had nothing to eat in the house. When I paid the delivery boy I included a large tip, considering the roads and the fact that he had to come out in the cold to bring me dinner. He went to make change and I told him the change was for him,and his response was 'Really? Are you sure?' I thought that was so cute and sweet.

Re: Homeowners - Tipping for the Holidays ...

So we did the tipping today... Mail lady got $10, since like I had said... we get everyone elses mail. Garbage men got $20 (FH didn't agree, thought that was to gererous), but I think they deserve it totally. Paper boy only got $5, because we only get the weekend paper and only have gotten delivery for 1 month now. Glad that is over with! Till next yr...

I give my mailman $15 & a box of candy, he's been my mailman for years & when I had my home based business he always hooked me up with making sure all my stuff got to me in good condition.
As for the garbage men-I give them really good work gloves-tomorrow morning one of us will go out & give them to them.
our Newsday LADY actually sent a letter with a self addressed envelope to say that since we pay by credit card she wants us to know how we can tip her. I thought it was pretty ballsy but I haven't tipped her ever because I've never seen her-so this year I'll mail ten bucks & a note saying'please don't throw the paper under my car!'

Are they allowed to give a card asking for a tip?? I don't even think it's mandatory. I didn't get one of those cards, but my DH will tip the sanatation workers when he sees them either tomorrow or Fri. morn. I don't feel comfortable leaving money taped to my garbage can.

We tape the card to the top of the garbage can.
