Thanks!

Great post Cira - I was thinking about the same question. We only moved in 2 months ago so we're not sure what to do.
Help us fellow homeowners!!!!

How do you tip the garbage men? Just wait outside at 6 am or what?

We got a slip of paper from the garbage men, the other day, and my parents threw it out. I am sorry but why do they need a tip??

Re: Homeowners - Tipping for the Holidays ...
Cira, that's more or less what we tip.
Unfortunately the garbage men will be getting NOTHING this year because they have done nothing. I don't necessarily agree with this tactic, but Patrick is very firm about it.

Re: Homeowners - Tipping for the Holidays ...
I read some where on MSN about holiday tipping ettiquette. For some reason I thought I read that you shouldn't tip federal employees, and as such, that includes your mail carrier. I mean you can, but they are technically not supposed to accept any gifts over $20 (not that you'd tip more than that though).
We are tipping our 2 garbage men $15 each. They certainly picked up a lot of our home renovation trash this year.
Oh, and I tipped my Newsday carrier $20. He delivers without fail every day and my paper is always dry.....

Re: Homeowners - Tipping for the Holidays ...
I got a envelope in my paper a last weekend suggesting a holiday gift! What the!? I threw it out. I thought it was so rude. I have no idea who delivers my papers (not Newsday, by the way..I live in Dallas). My mail carrier doesn't even get out of the truck to deliver our mail and he leaves the mailbox flap down so whenever it rains we have wet mail. Garbage men throw my recycle bin down the block where I have to track it down. So no tips this year, besides 'Do better at your job!'

Re: Homeowners - Tipping for the Holidays ...
It's so funny b/c Rob says he doesn't get a tip so why do we have to tip other people for doing their job.
As far as the garbage men, like Trish, they picked up a lot of garbage during our renovations, so we will tip them.
I have the home addresses for our newpaper carriers ... I got their cards with our newspapers ... too funny! But I use to be a newspaper girl and I, for the most part, got tipped .... and my paper is there every morning by 6 a.m. , dry too.

But back to the original question, how do you tip the garbage men when you aren't home?

I agree - how would you tip the garbage men? I've never heard of that.
We don't get Newsday, so I save some $$ there. And I am not tipping the mailman, either. I am giving him a box of chocolates and a Christmas Lotto scratch off ticket.

Re: Homeowners - Tipping for the Holidays ...
I figured on tipping the mailman $15.
I am not tipping the Newsday deliverer because when it rains my paper is mush.
I never even thought of tipping the garbage men, but I can't think of any way other than to do it in person.
Maybe ask your neighbors what they do?

Re: Homeowners - Tipping for the Holidays ...
We will definitely tip the garbage men. There is a set limit in our area for how much you can put out each time. When we moved in (and since) we have been throwing out alot of big stuff...volumes of stuff and DH tipped them early on and they always take everything, no matter how much. Well worth it!
Mail carriers - I posted on another thread...we have so many different mail carriers, I dont know how to tip fairly. Any suggestions?

Re: Homeowners - Tipping for the Holidays ...
We're definately tipping the mailman. HEs a sweet guy and its been the same guy since we moved here. He'll always ring my bell if theres a pkg or item that doesnt fit in the mailbox, he'll always doublecheck things or be thoughtful about things. Hes great.
I also got the 'Happy Holidays' note frm the garbage men, and from what we've heard, they should be 'taken care of' or they will NOT take care of you.
The paper boys, my brothers were paper boys many moons ago and were so happy to receive their tips. so I think maybe a little something to them too but who wants to get up at 6am
anyone else? i feel like im on a cruise

Re: Homeowners - Tipping for the Holidays ...
I saw the article on MSN about tipping too and it did say that mail carriers should not be tipped, and are encouraged to not take tips, though they can accept gifts. They suggested $10-15 for trash collectors and the same for the paper delivery.
We give the paper delivery person a monthly tip, and $10 at christmas - the paper is always on time, dry and always placed so we can easily find it, especially when there is lots of snow. The trash collectors were really good about picking up BIG stuff from us, so we were going to give $5 each (there were 3 names on the card they left) we figured only $5 because most collection days we only have one small bag of trash - not 3-4 cans like some of the large families in the area. DH works from home, but missed them today, so we'll try again. We had also considered leaving an envelope in the mailbox with their names, since that's where they put their card, we though maybe they'd be checking there....

Last year we taped a Christmas card with the garbage man's tip inside it to the top of the garbage can.

Re: Homeowners - Tipping for the Holidays ...
We are definately tipping the sanatation workers. They took everything that we threw away during our renovations. We threw out alot of stuff even after we had about 2 dumpsters full. We figured about $20-$40, but I'm gone for work by the time they pick up my garbage. T
he mailman I'm giving about $20. He's really a nice guy and takes my outgoing mail that I leave in my mailbox when I'm too lazy to go to the mailbox.
