Homeowners/Parents..re-post from parenting

This a question for all the homeowners / parents, we are in the process of buying our first home and we are in a co-op now, we are purchasing this house dependant on both our salaries, not every penny but close enough. Now that this is becoming so real with signing contracts - how could we think of starting a family, I would like to start 1 - 2 years from now and I am soo scared and don't think we could manage it on one salary. But we couldn't have a baby in our one bedroom SMALL co-op either. Anyone go through this?

I think that many couples have gone through this..

Don't be scared.. everything will work out.. have you thought about a home with an income perhaps? a rental?

Yes, true - this house that we fell in love with has a full basement, unfinished right now but no seperate entrance but we could always figure that out, even though I think we are going to need the basement for storage.

Just take it one step at a time. Once you get settled in your house you will get a better picture of what its really costing you to live. Remember you will get raises over the years, things will get paid off etc. Just watch that very tempting credit card usage. It can be a killer.

I worry about the same thing....
The type of house we want in the areas we are looking would be impossible on one salary at this point. But both he and I are doing well in our careers and we won't always be as financially tight as we are now....

I am confident things will work out!

I think it's only natural to worry about these things!

I agree with Fran once you get in the house you will get a better picture of what things really cost. Raises will come, you may pay off a car and free up some money. Enjoy your new home.

this is what we have been talking about...once DH's speeding ticket is off our insurance...and our car is paid off...things will be much more comfortable for us!!!

a coworker also said that babies are not that much of a cost (maybe the mommies can answer this more so)...its when they get older that it becomes more expensive...
