Honeymoon or House

Honeymoon or House

FH and I are having an ongoing 'debate' (to put it nicely) lately on our honeymoon. Right after the wedding we are going to the Poconos for a couple of days and the we were going to do a 2 week honeymoon in December-January. I've started to get quotes from travel agents on Hawaii and some all inclusive resorts in the Carribbean (sp?). I thought they were pretty good but when I told FH he didn't agree. He said that he didn't want to spend that kind of money and he'd rather use it towards a house. I want to do something special b/c it is our honeymoon and we never go away.

Is anyone else having this issue? How can I get him to see it differently.?

yes but reversed in our case. I did not want a honeymoon and f did so what we did was just change what we were going ot do. We were going to go to st. lucia but it was a little pricey so we decided on a cruise it is half the price. I would go to a travel agent and get some info. FM me if you have any questions!

my advice is save the $$ for a house - i would still go on a honeymoon but you don't need to do an expensive trip - mexico is supposed to be nice and inexpensive so maybe you can do something like that for 5 days vs a trip to hawaii (which would def be more expensive).......its your HM and you will be on cloud nine no matter where you go - i would still want to get away for sure but you dont have to go all out to have an amazing honeymoon.....i think something like that would be a good compromise between you guys - a less expensive trip so you can still save some cash for a house as well....

2010 bride here:

my FH & I are currently having the same debate. FH will be paying for the honeymoon & we both would like to go to Hawaii. he thinks its too expensive but my argument is that in the past 9 years that we have been together we have never gone on a vacation. the only vacation we go on is to my parents house upstate, NY. i understand its expensive but think its something that should be splurged on. we would like to have kids within a year of getting married so i don't see anyother time for the two of us to go on a honeymoon type vacation.

what i been doing is everytime he brings it up i remind of about how we never spend money on vacation & how once we have kids we wont have time or money to go on a vacation like that. try doing the same.

ITA.
FH and I are planning on going to Hawaii for our honeymoon-- it was FH's idea. Whereas I am sure it is lovely it is so friggin expensive that I dont know whether it is worth it! I would rather use the money toward a house.
We went to Cabo, Mexico last November and stayed at an all inclusive resort (really really nice but not a Four Seasons or anything quite that fancy pants) and i believe that after doing some research and using an orbitz coupon code-- we ended up getting our entire package.. airfare , airport transfers, and all inclusive hotel for 6 nights for somewhere around 1,000 -1,200 each.

We had this battle, but reversed. He REALLY wanted the honeymoon and I was fine going someplace more affordable- Costa Rica/Punta Cana ect.

FH won this battle. I listened to his reasons and he was right that we were NOT going to get to Bora Bora again for at least 5 years...if ever. It was always his dream to spend his honeymoon in an over water bungalow. It REALLY mattered to him. We'll probably spend close to $16 grand after food and shopping but in my mind, his happiness is priceless.

We still have savings and will figure out our next steps when we get back, my wedding wish will have been fulfilled and he will have his dream trip. We both get everything we wanted.

I would say save for the house.. Eric & I actually eloped 2 years ago by a judge and now we are finally having a ceremony in the church.. We have a house and I think it was the best decision for us b/c now we have a 14 month old little girl. I guess it all depends on your personal situation.. in my case we were able to have the house instead of a big wedding but now we are having a wedding since we are alittle more secure.. I would give it alot lot of thought about the honeymoon.. just weigh out your pro's & con's. I'm sure whatever you decide to do you will be happy.. Good Luck!!

Quite frankly, I would do ANYTHING (a house, wedding or HM) if I was unsure if I could afford it. All of us brides are panicked about how much $$ we're spending, but I would never go into debt for a wedding or a HM.

That being said even if you spend $10,000 on a HM, the difference between a $440,000 and a $450,000 at 6.25% over 30 years is $61 a month.

IMO You dont need to spend double the price on a vacation to go somewhere that is supposed to be better than another place.

You and your FH are going to have an awesome time no matter where you go.

We only spent about 3500 on our honeymoon and DH thought it was our best vacation yet. We have traveled alot and spent much more than that on other trips.

I would stick with a less costly trip, its your honeymoon. Its going to be bliss wherever you are

I would do the honeymoon .. its something that your going to probably regret and if he is giving you problems about it then I would budget the HM and not go soooo expensive. Another thing you could have done was register for a honeymoon and when people put $$ in your honey fund then he cant say anything ... you'll have to go on a HM..lol

We were kind of in a similar situation, i wanted to go to hawaii and fh thought it was too expensive and the flight was too long.
we booked our hm for punta cana, and got a great deal so we are both happy

you should def go somewhere on your hm, but it doesn't have to be expensive

Re: Honeymoon or House

Thanks girls - its def going to be a tough decision. We have some time since we're not going to go till december. I sent him a bunch if links to diff resort websites for him to check them out on his own time instead of me nagging him to look at stuff w/ me. I'm also going to have the Travel Agent keep her eyes on the prices for me and hopefully everything will work out.

IMO: RE is so low right now and who knows what prices will be in 10 years. Buy the house. Take cheaper honeymoon. THEN..in like 5 years ; on your anniversary- go tot Hawaii.
Your dollar will be worth more.
Something to look forward too...as others said you can have HM anywhere- it will be great!
Why add stress of money???

Just my opinion and what I would do...

I may buy a bigger place due to falling prices and if we do, we decided to put off HM.
