Re: honeymoon (tahiti) and possibility of war
I have to say Leap that I am in the same boat and I am leaning toward changing my honeymoon. We were supposed to go to Greece and it just isn't a good idea right now.
I know this is going to start trouble but I have to say Jennbaby that if you hate the talk about war, maybe you shouldn't reply to these posts. We all have different wedding concerns from dresses to invitations and for some of us, the war with Iraq is a huge concern. My FH is from a military family. One of his groomsmen and his brother, my future brother in law might not be at our wedding because of the war. So bare with those of us that have these concerns.

Re: honeymoon (tahiti) and possibility of war
not for nothing, but if anything were to happen, tahiti would probably be safer than hawaii. tahiti is a colony of france, who are a bunch of cowards, and i couldn't imagine a terrorist attack there since they are staying out of it. i would imagine american territory/citizens/etc would be a bigger target.
jennbaby probably hates war talk because war is bad. there is nothing wrong with saying that.

Well said Rlivings! I hope that things work out for you and your FI's family. Your concerns about the war and the impact your family make some of our concerns about dresses, invitations and favors pale in comparrison. While we should not be frozen by threats of terrorism or war, these concerns are valid. You should do what you feel is right for you and your FI - go girl !

good point matt_hos...
it is really sad that we have to worry about these things...but our concerns are definitely valid...

Re: honeymoon (tahiti) and possibility of war
I think as long as you stay out of the middle east region/north africa, you're pretty safe.
I think the war talk on liweddings is a bit overdone too, and yes FH and I have a best man currently the air force, so its not like we can't relate.
We're flying to Costa Rica and so far have no worries. And if we had more $$$ to spend on a tahiti honeymoon, we would probably still go there.

Ditto Alina. I think it's getting out of hand too.
No one has any idea where, what, when, the next thing will happen or if it's safe. The best thing you can do for yourself is decide if you personally can handle it and go from there.
This world is huge, their opportunity is huge, and it's completely out of your control. You can live your life, or shy away...I say live...and GO!

Another thing that I wanted to add is to check the gov't warnings about wherever you're going and speak with your travel agent.
If you're just scared of flying, that's a whole different ballgame, and I don't think that flying inside USA is more or less safe than international.

Re: honeymoon (tahiti) and possibility of war
I love all the boards I have read about how 'we are all entitled to our opinions' and what not but yet it seems that there are some girls that want to dictate what is appropriate to post and talk about.
I am sorry that you feel that the 'war talk' is overdone. You are lucky to not have the impending war be a shadow over the happiness of your wedding. Some of us are not as lucky and it is of greater concern that flowers and favors.
I think it is rather apathetic not to see it from our point of view. Military families don't tire of 'war talk'. Once again, if you think it is 'too much', why do you respond to the post? Let the brides who don't think it is too much have a place to speak their monds.

rlivings, I responded to the post to express my opinion and I respect yours. Actually, by responding, I am to some extent doing a service to leap by bumping her post and letting more brides see it and respond to it.

Re: honeymoon (tahiti) and possibility of war
I'm not exactly sure what you mean by 'we don't have the impending war weighing on our heads'....
Because obviously, very obviously, we do...seeing as I am getting married in 3 1/2 months, and Alina is getting married in July. And it is of greater concern to me than flowers or favors, and I've thought about it so often, that I even considered pushing my wedding date up because of it. So do us all a favor, and don't assume that we are as superficial as you'd like to believe.
What we are trying to get across is our opinion, and that opinion being it doesn't matter where you are, who you are, or where you are going, you have to worry about it, but you can't let it run your life. We chose not to have it run our lives, and to not base our decisions on travel on what may or may not happen.
And what we mean by overdone is that there are quite a few posts on the same topic, not that we think it's not a good topic, or one not worth discussing.

Re: honeymoon (tahiti) and possibility of war
I don't think that Rlivings was in any way calling anyone superfical ! I think she was merely responding to the posts of 'war talk on LIW is a bit overdone' - obviously, the war and honeymoon plans are wedding related. We all get good ideas on this board from other brides and to say that we can't talk about concerns on this board in direct relationship to a possible war or terrorism and its impact on our weddings isn't fair. How many of the same posts are on this board about the same florits, invites, florist, vendors, etc. and no one says that's overdone.

Re: honeymoon (tahiti) and possibility of war
I'm not arguing this any further because it's pointless. We gave our advice on the topic, and I am going to agree to disagree regarding the posts above.
No sense in turning this into another LI Weddings posting tirade....

Re: honeymoon (tahiti) and possibility of war
i think tahiti will be fine. we're going in july and i see no threat to our safety. yes we'll probably get insurance in case we have to cancel or something. but tahiti of all places i would consider to be safe for a honeymoon .. probably safer than anywhere in america during wartime!

Re: honeymoon (tahiti) and possibility of war
I say go for it...we are going to Italy and unless there are troops lined up on the Amalfi Coast, I'm going! Also, like some of the above posts have said, being in the US would probably be far less safe than Tahiti. We could potentially have problems on the subways, in Grand Central at the Empire State building etc, but that shouldn't stop us from living our normal lives.
But if you feel safer and that it would be easier to get back home, if God forbid something were to happen, then by all means, Hawaii would be an amazing vacation as well.
