Honeymooning in Costa Rica

Original post by tarakinspa

I was talking with a friend today who went last year and although they had known someone who owned a house on the beach from who they rented from she said it was beautiful and very affordable. She said someone else she knew went there and got one of those little bungalows that have the glass floor with the fish underneath like they have in tahiti which I know i wont be able to afford,

Any feedback?

this is the Canopy Tour, most hotels offer this tour, it looks scary but it's AWESOME!!!! You go from tree-top to tree-top & see lots of flora & fauna, then they took us swimming afterwards under this waterfall, really beautiful!!

Tara-

The bed/bungalow was at La Paloma on the Osa Pennisula (the southweat tip of Costa Rica). You're literally in the jungle overlooking the ocean. Tons of wildlife. The picture of the monkey was taken by the pool.

It was a little more rustic that I expected, but it was awesome.

Where should i start researching then? Its a little early to go to a travel agent especially when i have a million other things that need to get done first. What sites did you go to?

Re: Honeymooning in Costa Rica

Well I mentioned to a travel agent that was at the showcase i just went to and they said May is too hot and humid but hot to them was 80-90 which is fine with me so I dont know.

I am in love with Punta Islita Evelyn! Which room did you stay in? I am thinking these junior suites would be perfect! Here are some pictures for everyone else listening in.....

Tara,
I stayed in one of their jacuzzi cabanas, it's so private & so quiet there, really sets the romantic mood. They put fresh flowers on your bed everyday, there's a guitar player that comes to your table during dinner & you can sit on a swing under the stars, so beautiful.....I would HIGHLY recommend Punta Islita to any couple who wants the perfect romantic, non-crowded getaway. They have it all from adventure to relaxing on the beach & doing nothing or perhaps having a fruity cocktail in their swim-up bar. 80-90 is perfect, it's a rainforest for Pete's sake, what was this travel agent thinking?! Obviously doesn't know much about this beautiful country!! It was humid when were there too, but you have the ocean & a beautiful pool or your own jacuzzi at your feet!! I also recommend Tabaccon Spa/Resort in Arenal & either Si Como No or Tulemar Bungalows in Manuel Antonio, all VERY nice!!!

Re: Honeymooning in Costa Rica

So the pictures I posted are the room you stayed in? I am definetly sold on Punta islita if i go!!! Now to pick other hotels
What about at Si como no and the tabacon, which rooms did you stay in there.

Re: Honeymooning in Costa Rica

Yes, the pictures are EXACTLY the room we stayed in, BTW...same view from jacuzzi!!! You won't be sorry if you go to Punta Islita, by the way, it's about 20 minutes by small plane from San Jose, as is Manuel Antonio, but what we did was fly from Punta Islita to San Jose & took a car/van to Manuel Antonio just so we could see the countryside, however that's like a three hour trip by land. In Si Como No we stayed in the Deluxe Room, they also have Honeymoon packages, check it out...

Tara,
even though I did not stay at Tulemar Bungalows in Manuel Antonio, we're thinking of staying there next time we go. Their bungalows are amist the rain forest (2 acres) and the bungalows are octagonal shaped so you have a 360 degree view of the rainforest & ocean. Here's a pic & their website: http://www.tulemar.com

Re: Honeymooning in Costa Rica

OK, in Tabacon we stayed in one of their regular rooms but they do have suites, we figured we would be out most of the time at the spa (we spent a lot of time at the hot springs, which you don't have to pay the enterance fees if you stay there since the hotel owns the property). The food at the place was awesome too!! We spent Valentines day there & my fiance gave me a day at their spa as a gift....HEAVEN!!!! I highly recommend it!!

I am a little scared to fly in those tiny airplanes though

Re: Honeymooning in Costa Rica

Oh and did you book through a travel agent or online by yourself? I am wondering whether these 'honeymoon' packages are a rip off, that maybe better to just book and then tell them you are on your honeymoon.

Example: for honeymoon special at Si Como no 2 nights in a deluxe suite with flowers, wine, dinner for 2, breakfast and welcome cocktail it's $800

but meanwhile 2 nights in the deluxe suite that include breakfast only comes out to $420..... i am just wondering whether or not some flowers and wine will account for the additional $400.

It would help if i knew how much it cost to eat at the restaurant...I will try emailing them if they will give me the info.

There are alot of hotels in the chain with Si como no, was there a reason why you chose that one over the others?

Tulemar also looks pretty cool buyt it's hard to tell, might be a little different than the more resort feeling I will have at Punta Islita.

Sorry to ask so many questions but you are really helping me and I love you for it.
Thanks again

Re: Honeymooning in Costa Rica

Tara,

I think you're right, Si Como No doesn't have a 'Honeymoon Suite' so it's not worth the package, you're better of staying in a suite & doing some of their tours or visiting their spa. I booked everything myself, I bought a couple of books, found a lot of info online and just booked the flights & hotels on my own.

I HATE flying!!! But I actually was ok on the small plane, it was only 20 minutes long & I figured I could handle that as opposed to a four hour drive to get to & from Punta Islita. You can get there (or anywhere) by car. You always have the option to either rent a car or hire a driver like we did. (See website in previous post).

There was no real reason why we picked Si Como No other than the fact that it looked nice. It was also the place where the cast & crew of 'Jurassic Park' stayed when they filmed the movie in Costa Rica, so I figured if it was good enough for them... Plus I loved the idea that they are environmentally friendly (the hotel is solar powered). We stayed there three nights & we also stayed at Hotel California for two, that was a much smaller hotel but it was closer to the town itself so... There are other beautiful hotels in Manuel Antonio, there's also the Mariposa Hotel,

Re: Honeymooning in Costa Rica

They also have BEAUTIFUL, Private vacation homes for rent that cost as much as the hotels: check out:

http://www.vacationrentals.com

Just another option. Food in the hotels will run you anywhere from $15 to $30 per person (if I remember correctly). Food in a restaurant in town depending on where you go is about the same. The food is pretty yummy in the hotels, as are their drinks!

Here's a view from the private vacation rental... this runs about $240 a night....

Let me know what else you need to know!
