Hotel Block
I need to start looking into a hotel block for my OOT guests. We have a lot of people on our guest list that will be traveling but I have no idea how many rooms I will need to block. It's hard to gauge who will and won't be able to make it. Will hotels open up more rooms if needed? Do you have to pay for rooms that don't get booked up? TIA!

I just block booked with the hilton garden inn Westbury. They started me out with 10 and if you need more they can add more. They give you a website to view who books rooms and how many are left. They also gave me a website to send to people for easy booking that you can personalize. You dont have to pay for any rooms that you do not book. They gave me till 08/01/14 for my block booking code after that they rooms are up for grab. I send out my hotel info early to my guests through email since they warned me there are two other weddings that weekend.

Most hotels start you off with 10 and once those fill up, they will add more based on their availability. They usually have a booking deadline 1 month prior to the wedding.

I blocked at the Viana, and ended up booking 30 rooms pretty quickly, so definitely add MORE than what you need. With the Viana, you are only required to book 1/2 of what you block, so if you book 30, you just have to guarantee 15 get booked... So if you think you'll get alot of people, book 40 rooms so that you only have to guarantee 20 :)

Depends on the hotel. I put my future mother in law in charge of that. She started calling around and some places said you had to pay if you guaranteed a certain amount and the rooms didn't fill. Others recommended start with 10.

Just call and ask the hotels you are thinking of using. Most won't let you plan the block to a year before.

I'm going to put Derek in charge, LOL. It is hard to estimate who will be coming with all of our weddings and who knows where they will all want to stay!

We have our hotel block with the Inn at Great Neck. I love them but I do have to say that the down side is that we're paying for our own shuttles. The Viana was awesome and provided shuttles for us, but we ended up switching hotels because it just didn't make sense to go that far away from our venue.

We are blocking off 10 rooms at fox hollow, since that is where we are getting married. We do have to guarentee a certain % of the rooms, but we are hoping that since our wedding is over 600 days away we will be ok! We are able to add extra rooms to the block if necessary. I am posting the lodging information on our wedding website so ppl can start booking and I am going to ask them to let me know if they need it for another night or if the block is full.
We might also look to block rooms at another hotel nearby.
