Hotel Block question

Hotel Block question

Alright, so I have no idea how this works - do I have to put a down payment on the rooms? If they don't all get booked, are we still responsible for the cost?

We're probably only going to need 6-9 rooms, because everyone else from out of state has already said they're going to stay with family. Is it even worth it for us to block them with such few rooms?

Sorry for all the questions! This is one thing I am completely clueless about!

Usually there isn't a down payment.. You just set up a block of rooms (typically 10) and lock in a rate for your guests. Whatever isn't booked a month before your wedding is released at no charge to you. Just make sure with the hotel that you are not responsible for rooms that aren't booked. This is the policy with most but there's always the few that try to make you pay. Also I just reserved a room at a hotel for a wedding and my card isn't being charged until I check out which is nice.

That was my concern too; having to put down money on hotels.
But as mentioned, most hotels don't. You can reserve 10 rooms initially and if you don't use them, they get released. I have people from out of state coming in, not many though. But, I do have people on LI who are coming from the west and they may not want to drive all the way back home at midnight, so I counted some of them too.

If you need a service, I used Kleinfeld Hotel Blocks and they were wonderful and very responsive. It's free to use.

I blocked 15 rooms and need to guarantee 10. If we don't get 10 rooms filled, FH and I need to pay for whatever rooms until we hit 10. Hotel rooms need to be booked by April or the remaining rooms will be released.

I did room blocks at The East Wind, and two other hotels in the area. The East Wind did make me guarantee a certain number of rooms and we're on the hook for the ones that don't get booked. The other two were free, they each blocked off 10 rooms and any that don't get booked are released a month prior to the wedding. If my guests wait too long, too bad for them, they miss out on the rate.

No deposit required, but that depends on the hotel. I called a bunch of hotels in the area, got the best price and then set up my block. They would only let me do 10, and if those sell out I could add more based upon hotel availability. I have to say I haven't had the best experience with my hotel so far, the front desk people are great, but the person who set up my contract and block was very nasty when I spoke to her the other day.

We blocked I believe 15-20 rooms (since we have a lot of out of town guests and friends definitely staying over) and you we have to guarentee a percentage of those rooms otherwise you will have to pay for those not used. I think that was how it was explained to me. Lol

We booked 25 but aren't obligated to the cost of any. They just asked for realistic numbers. We are staying at the Huntington Hilton on 110 in Melville. Also like the other girls said if rooms aren't booked by said date then guests lose the option of the reduced rate and if we need to add more to the block we can always do that once those 25 are booked

I blocked 25 rooms at the Hyatt next to the wind watch and I only have 3 rooms left. I'm not responsible for the other 3 I just had to guarantee 20. You don't need a down payment, and their credit cards aren't charged until the night of, or day after I think. I'm sure each hotel is different, so I would double check!

I'm surprised that everyone was on the hook for rooms not booked! We booked 3 RVC hotels (hampton inn, holiday inn, and best western) since we have a lot of out of town guests. I'm glad I did b/c a friend's cousin got engaged after us and booked her wedding for the night before ours and is also using the hampton inn! We have 10 rooms at each and when they get filled they will open up more rooms. But if they don't get filled, we're not on the hook for anything. We actually aren't even publicizing the Best Western block unless the other two get filled as they are the 'main' hotels.

Hmm, so it seems to really depend on the hotel you choose, then! Thanks so much for the info ladies, I'll have to start calling around!
