Just curious I am thinking about starting to call hotels to reserve a block of rooms: How far in advance did you call? How much of a reduction in price did you get? How many rooms did you have to block to get the reduced price? Did you reserve a hotel block in more then one hotel for different price points?

I really suggest using www.hotelplanner.com. You name your price, and they do the work for you. They send you a list of hotels that meet your needs, and then you contact those hotels after that. Better have them do the leg work than you.
This is what we're using.

We blocked our rooms 1 year in advance. We got a discounted rate of $139 & $149 per night. We can block in 10 room incriminates and we only chose one hotel because the pricing was the best.

We aren't getting married until October and I already blocked off rooms. I know it's something that I would forget when I got caught up with everything so I figured I would do it sooner rather than later. The Fox Hollow has their own hotel so we obviously blocked off rooms there!

good to know as Viana is one of my options.
my office job is also located inside a hotel so I'm hoping the hotel we rent our space from will hook me up!!! it's a beautiful Hyatt but it is a little out of the way from my venue

For the Viana, you can block off 10 rooms with no penalty if you dont block them all. If you decided to block off any more than 10, then at least half have to book, and if not you have to pay for the room. We blocked off 24 rooms, and have to ensure that 12 get booked. They also keep the bar open until 2am every weekend, and until 4am on holiday weekends, so you won't have to pay anything to keep the bar open.
Also, if 10 rooms book, the honeymoon suite is free :) and the guests get 10% off in the spa downstairs

I did my hotel block a little over a year in advance. All of FH's family and most of our friends and bridal party are from out of state so we needed to block off a lot! We're using the Hyatt Regency in Hauppauge and got rates of $110 per night.

We will be looking into doing a hotel block about a year before our wedding date. The few hotels I asked said there was a 10 room minimum, and we could always increase the number of rooms blocked at any later time if we wish. I think we get around 10% off of the regular rate.

We booked a year in advance at one hotel. We got a discounted rate of $99 per room with no minimum of nights stayed. (some hotels do that). If we have 10 rooms booked, which we definitely do since a lot of our guests are coming from the city, we get to stay for free!

I was told it was 15 rooms without penalty and 15 for the free suite. I guess it might vary depending on time of year? If you want to keep the bar open until 4am on a non-holiday weekend, it's $200, plus a $300 minimum bar tab.
The hotel is very nice, and the bar area is great for an after party. HTH!

Just double-checked the contract. It says 15 with no penalty and only 8 rooms for the bridal suite! I was wrong, but this is even better lol
