OK -- I was home visiting my parents in South Jersey -- Literally they live 15 minutes over the bridge to Philadelphia-- ( by no means Boonedocks) anyway -- where I grew up has all new houses and is continuing to grow -- I went and looked at a sample for the heck of it-- I was SICK -- it was a brand new brick colonial-- with 9 ft ceilings huge open foyer to the upstairs.... 4 bedrooms -- master suite with sitting room , jacuzzi... nice piece of land.. central air -- in ground sprinklers all for about $335,000. WE ALL KNOW WHAT WE CAN GET FOR THAT HERE ON THE ISLAND! I was so jealous!!! LOL

Bethlehem, PA area...we looked at BRAND NEW houses there...3 brms, central air, 2 car garage, cathedral ceiling in living room, fireplace, washer and dryer, etc etc etc...$225,000!!!!!
It's only an hour and half drive into the city...2 hour commute by bus to downtown Manhattan...which is the main reason FI and I are staying away from there for now...but I'd go in a heartbeat if he would!!!

Is that up near the Poconos?
A business assoc. lived near there while it wasn't too far she spent a small fortune commuting.

Re: House prices in NJ/Phila area!
30 minutes north of Atlanta:
Gorgeous 4 br, 2 ba, huge property, big LR, DR, huge kitchen, 2 car garage...$140,000
Unbelieveably stunning, 4 br, 3 ba (including master bathroom the size of a NYC studio-jacuzzi tub, 2 sinks, private toilet, shower stall, skylights), master bedroom cathedral ceilings, walk out deck, state of the art kitchen, breathtaking view of the mountains, huge 3 car garage...$300,000
BTW, the owner of the $140,000 house (which would easily be $450,000 here) is a teacher and she said she makes more there than she did here in NY.
It's really enough to depress you. Well my DH is tied to NYC for another 10 years and then we are gone! Probably not to Atlanta but we've got a long term plan that doesnt include living out our lives here. I'm not miserable in NY (except for the bugs LOL) but the quality of life is so much better in alot of other places.

Re: House prices in NJ/Phila area!
We thought about North Carolina ... $350K for a beautiful brand new home with Rob's same salary ... but I just can't leave New York and my family just yet!! I'd rather live small and close to my family and friends, then live big with no one around, if given the choice.
Just think of it this way ... the prices of the homes in the Tri-state area are very expensive but they will always retain their value and even increase because of the limited supply and desirable location. Prices in (comparable neighborhoods) Suffolk will always be cheaper than Nassau because of proximity to the City ... therefore you will never lose out. That cheaper house in PA will always be cheaper, so once you do buy, if you decide to stay in LI, you are set. The hardest is starting out ... it gets easier for most of us.

Re: House prices in NJ/Phila area!
I live in northwestern NJ (really high up) boonies-- when you hear about bear sighting/attacks they are in my town-- but my point being I am only 35 miles from NYC-- but I work with people who commute from PA--I could never do it but my God what you can afford out there is crazy!!!!! It is all relative--my Brother and SIL think we live in the boonies(ok so we do) but they live in South Jersey in a really expensive town and his commute is much much longer than mine--so I guess it is all relative Laura

Re: House prices in NJ/Phila area!
we live in morristown nj & the prices are slightly less than houses on LI (depending on the neighborhood). however, my salary dropped several thousand dollars.
1 hour & 5 min. commute by train to penn.

Cira - you are so right. That's the thing, the supply is much more limited here. The friends who have that $300K house I mentioned had their house in Florida on the market for 2 years. It was another gorgeous house, it wouldnt have stayed 2 months on the market here.
