So, I grew up in Suffolk Country - in a neighborhood that's since taken a turn for the worse. A few years back, Mom and Dad sold the house I grew up (heartbreaking) and moved to another town in Suffolk.
I've been living in Astoria for 11 years and I work in Manhattan. The FH's business is in Islandia, so I'm pretty sure we're going to end up mid-island or in Nassau somewhere.
The FH is from Baldwin. I'd like to avoid moving too close to the FMIL (love her, but she's a bit over bearing).
I was wondering where you all live or plan to live on Long Island. Good neighborhoods, good schools? I don't see us going too far east of Islandia, but would consider parts of Suffolk, close to Nassau border.

Re: Househunting on LI
We are in the process of looking - the towns we've looked in are West Islip, Bablyon Village, West Babylon, Sayville, Farmingdale, and Ronkonkoma. Right now we are trying to put an offer on a house in Ronkonkoma (which is near Islandia). We were looking in Islandia - but the school district for them is Central Islip which is not so good. Ronkonkoma is a nice area as well and it's in Sachem schools and I've heard Sachem schools are good.
ETA: I currently live in Hicksville and FH lives in Plainview. FH works out in Ronkonkoma and commutes out from Plainview. It's not that bad of a drive.

I grew up in West Islip...I have to say so I'm a little partial , Islip Babylon, WI has a great school district. Me and the FH have been looking and surprisingly there are some homes for around 350 that are south of Mountauk more desirable area. We are going to look at a few this weekend that are more in the West babylon area just to get an idea. They are small homes but good starters.

Oh! Thanks for responding to that! It's nice to hear it from someone who's actually gone through the schools or had kids there!

Re: Househunting on LI
Currently, we live next to DH's parents. Thats just SO much fun! and to top it off, we rent the house from them! Oh SOOOoo much fun! lol .. . jk on a serious note.... I grew up in Bethpage, all my life , so I love it! Nothing ever happens there. . . ever! But, me and Dh love having dogs and property...when we deciede to buy a house we will be looking out east-Holbrook, Oakdale and Sayville. Perferbally a high ranch! lol . . . those towns are GREAT! there are some towns to be careful of, I dont want to pinpoint, b/c i do not want to offend anyone on here if they happen to live in that town. So FM me for opinions if needed. Oakdale would be pefect for me b/c I want to go to dowling for my masters! :) we'll see.... GOOD luck!! :)

Re: Househunting on LI
I have to give a shout out for my hometown: Northport. Great village main street on the water, Parks galore, music and festivals in the summer, Victorian houses on main street, eaton's neck, asharoken, local police, a small local movie theater, hum, I could go on and on.
As a kid, it was a great place to grow up. The schools, although not the top ranked for some reason I don't understand, have excellent sports (for boys and girls!!!), good music/arts programs and some really unique special programs.
Many parts of east northport are included in the northport district and tend to be more reasonable.
I also like Sayville which many have already mentioned and its very similar to Northport, massapequa, and RVC.
Happy House Shopping!!

Re: Househunting on LI
We just started looking at starter houses and honestly - what we can afford -is levittown mostly but we are currently trying to put a bid on a house in Bethpage. Also, we have looked at east meadow, westbury (salisbury), wantagh, and bellmore. They all have pretty good schools!

Re: Househunting on LI
I grew up in Wantagh and the realistic nature is that Nassau is becoming increasingly expensive.. the good news is that its a real buyers market out there now. we will be looking in Farmingdale, Babylon Village and I think thats the only two towns on our plate right now.. the hardest part for me is that I want a older style house.. no capes or splits..

I am currently in the process of buying a house in Bethpage. I grew up there and really like it. They have 3 school districts in Bethpage. Island trees (not the best) Bethpage which is good and plainedge which I hear is really good.
GOOD LUCK

I grew up in Stony Brook and the Three Village School District is great. Alot of professors and doctors from Stony Brook hospital live in the area and I think it has an influence on the academics. If you stay south of 25A, the prices are more reasonable, but the taxes are ridiculous! I think my parents pay about $13,000 -- $15, 000!

Re: Househunting on LI
I am in the real estate business-I don't sell houses but I did just buy my house in East Northport w/Northport School districts.I love the town, the schools and the availability to shopping on Jericho Tpke as well as boutiques in the Town of Northport. Nassau seems to be extremely expensive because of the location to the city. I look at the value of houses, property sizes and towns all day. First, MLSLI, which other girls have recommended is an awesome site to look. Second, taxes in an area are a good factor to the area's condition too. If the taxes are high then the school district and town are more than likely a safe bet. Third, figure out if you bellieve you will have school aged children in the house before moving, if so, you need the school districts to be great. If not, you may be able to live in an ok area that has fair taxes with a great puchase price for a starter home. Just take your time. It is definitely a buyer's market. I have seen many homes stay on the market and drop their prices recently. Good Luck and if you need any specific are recommend. or more help-FM me.
