Househunting on LI

Househunting on LI

So, I grew up in Suffolk Country - in a neighborhood that's since taken a turn for the worse. A few years back, Mom and Dad sold the house I grew up (heartbreaking) and moved to another town in Suffolk.

I've been living in Astoria for 11 years and I work in Manhattan. The FH's business is in Islandia, so I'm pretty sure we're going to end up mid-island or in Nassau somewhere.

The FH is from Baldwin. I'd like to avoid moving too close to the FMIL (love her, but she's a bit over bearing).

I was wondering where you all live or plan to live on Long Island. Good neighborhoods, good schools? I don't see us going too far east of Islandia, but would consider parts of Suffolk, close to Nassau border.

We are looking in Babylon Village, West Islip and Sayville. They all have good school districts and are safe neighborhoods. I would also consider the Northport/East Northport area and Dix Hills but my FH can not even stomach the thought of not living by the bay. Farmingdale is good, as is Wantagh and Seaford. I know certain parts of Massapequa are good but I'm not sure how the school district is. My parents live in St. James and the Smithtown school district is good too. And Hauppauge is close to Islandia and that's supposed to be good also.

We just bought a house through Prudential Douglas Elliman. On their website you can look at and compare the different towns that you're interested in.

Here's the link.

Good luck!!

We bought a house in Massapequa, and it is wonderful, Its great because we are so close to 3 main parkways, the southern state and the seaford oyster bay and the wantagh parkway.

I feel like i can get places very quick, and the neighborhood is absolutely wonderful.

Houses are very reasonable as well

I grew up in Massapequa Park-the school district is said to be one of the best. The houses can range in price quite dramatically. If you look south of Merrick Rd. the prices are very high-a lot of them are on the water and are beautiful. Homes north of Merrick Rd will be cheaper. Massapequa is a very safe town and I would highly recommend it.

We have been looking also. We want to try to stay closer to queens as possible. Westbury, garden city, Floral park, franklin sq, Lynnbrook, great neck, manhassett, are just a few.

How much are you looking to spend?

Re: Househunting on LI

I don't know. It's so difficult to gauge that right now. There are too many factors to consider.

I'm imagining that whatever we buy at this point will not be the house we are in in 20 years. I'm looking at this as more of a starter.

The neighborhoods on LI vary so much, from $350 to over a mill. You would need to figure out a price range. Check out MSLI.com.

Yup, I'm clear on that.

I just wanted to get a sense of what you all thought of various neighborhoods.

I really have no idea what our financials will be at the end of the year. Mom and Dad plan to give us a substantial amount for a down payment, but I don't know how much yet. I don't like to ask - seems greedy.

I grew up in Sea Cliff (near Glen Cove) School distrcits are very good, but I know it is a pricey neighborhood (Gold Coast, all that sh it) I don't know how my parents did it!

I am living in Floral Park now, I am not sure of how the school districts are but I would suggest looking in garden city park, mineola, carle place? I love Floral Park, it is such a cute area and very accesible...I know the train ride is 40 minutes into Manhattan....but transfer at Jamaica...Boo!!

I grew up in Bethpage. That's a great town and the schools are very good. I currently live in Farmingdale, which is okay but the high school is not so good. FH & I want to move to Bethpage after we get married. It's a small town and the schools are great.

Bethpage is not too far from Suffolk County. The towns that border it are Plainview, Levittown, Farmingdale and Plainedge.

HTH...

I'm origonally from Seaford and a teacher here on LI. Seaford, Massapequa, Wantagh are great for the Southshore. Bayville, where I work is an awesome beach town with a top-rate School District, Huntington is a great town, schools are good, East Northport, affordable, a little further out east, great schools.

Sayville! I bought a house here in April and it is AMAZING. The shool district was recently written up in Newsday as one of the top three on the Island. My son LOVES his kindergarten class for whatever that is worth. And they have good options for aftercare and before care if you need it. The people are mostly friendly and warm. The town is ADORABLE filled with great little shops and restaurants. The beach and parks are great for the kids. And they have a community calendar that gives you lots of options for spending time with yoru family - festivals, family nights, story times, games, etc.. It is really great - we love Movies int the park, the Apple Fesitval, The Seafood Fest, Bradstock...

The upshot is - if you are looking for a cute, clean and friendly town with an active downtown, and a lot of family appeal... DEFINITELY check out Sayville!
