houses....

Ok, since we are all 'Long Island' Brides..... then we all know!
WHERE ARE WE SUPPOSED TO LIVE AFTER WE GET MARRIED. Me and FH don't make bad money, but come on...... you can NOT find a house ( in a good neighborhood at least ) for under $300, 000......

we were thinking of moving out of state...but im scared to leave our families.....so im thinking we're just gonna have do the apartment thing until little footsteps come along..

Anyone else have any house luck?

Thats exactly how I feel!
We were all set for North Carolina, then found out FH job fell through and then the hurricanes...then decided PA, went there last weekend and was BORED TO DEATH!
We dont know where to go
its scary..and sad......... at least we're not alone

Re: houses....

you're DEFINITELY not alone!!! a lot of people on here are just frustated with the situation. especially since most of us are paying for the majority of the wedding...but to be honest, an extra 30,000 on a down payment probably wouldn't make much of a dent in your mortgage payment a month.

fh and i make decent money, but we don't think it's worth it to buy something we can afford if it's something we don't want. we were even willing to go far out on the island and even out there due to development and everything it's JUST AS EXPENSIVE!!!

we used to say that we didn't want to rent cause it's a 'waste of money'

but at this point...we just have no choice...but it's okay!! i look at it as one less stress during our first couple of years of marriage which sounds good enough to me!

good luck!

We are lucky because FH mom is giving us the house.

What you should do is look into short term investment savings like CD's or something similar with will allow you to save money toward your house. Something that will allow you to earn a percentage on your savings.

Re: houses....

FH and I both go to school in Virginia... and I'm pretty sure this is where we'll stay.

Unfortunatly, where we were planning on living (No. Va) is almost as expensive as LI - only the taxes are cheaper...

We might wind up in the suburbs of Richmond where my friend and her FH are looking to be a 3 br/1 bathroom ranch for $175,000... that would be what? $350,000 in a decent neighborhood on LI...

Sad thing is... we could afford to live on Long Island... if we could find jobs (FH is going to be a school psychologist, I'm a teacher, but there are no teaching jobs!)

There are no teaching jobs in LI? Seriously?

Re: houses....

we got lucky, we found a great house and got in before the seller went through realestate. it was the highest amount we wanted to spend, but it needed the least amount of work.

Well, it's not that there aren't any, it's just that they're really tough to find... out of 3 of my friends looking for jobs on LI, only one got a full time job (secondary science) one got a long term sub position, and the other got this job learning the reading program... when she's done learning it, she'll become a sub, and then will kind of be at the top of the list to get a job...

Meanwhile... here in VA i had people basically offering me a job before i graduated...

The problem w/ teaching on li is that there's a lot more competition for jobs... and there are fewer schools opening. Virginia is growing so much that many counties have two and three elementary schools opening every year - much better odds!

Ok, well that makes sense.

Re: houses....

We are moving in with my parents (our own apartment in the basement) for a few years to save for a house. We live together on our own now, so it will be an adjustment, but if we want a house and kids one day, we have to sacrafice. We thought of moving out of state, but we don't want to, so we are going to find a way. You will be able to do it, just have to save save save and not rush into it. The prices can't go any higher than they are now, so you can set a goal for a few years from now.

Re: houses....

We've given up on moving back to NY. Houses in Queens where I grew up are ridiculously expensive. My favorite line in an ad is 'need a little TLC' or 'handy Man's Special!' and it costs $500,000.
We're staying in Chicago and we bought a condo downtown. Things are a little better here but not by much which is kind of sad. I wouldn't make anymore in NY so we're staying put. Sometimes I think about the southwest...no humidity...

There is just no way we can afford a house in any boro of New York, so we are aiming for a co-op or condo a few years after we are married.

after about 2 seconds of researching prices in Brooklyn, LI, and Westchester, we laughed hysterically and decided to move away for a few years to save and have a nicer time as stress-free Newlyweds in North Carolina.

We bought a 1 bedroom condo for quite a bit over $200,000. It is large for a one bedroom, but still a one bedroom!

Re: houses....

We have been living in CT for the last 4 years and want to move back to LI so very badly, we miss our families, BUT just too damn expensive. Moving back after we are just married just won't be a good financial decision, and we do not want to live with our parents.

CT isn't much different in some areas than LI, but you can get a bigger house, more land for the same price as LI. In some areas you can get a huge house for about two and change.
CT is where will will stay for at least another 5 years.

We go through the same thing...my FH would leave NY in a heartbeat, but I don't want to leave my family. I'm very close with my sister and she has two small children and I would miss them terribly.

We both make a decent living, but I don't foresee us owning a house anytime soon.

Re: houses....

We got lucky and also got to a seller through FH brother before they went to real estate.
We saved like $20 grand that way and also got a really great price on the house for the area.
We are fortunate as FH has a great job and I do ok also. I'm so thankful for what we have. I cant imagine how anyone does it.
My cousins have a house they brought about 3 years ago and with there 3 children they struggle everyday.

My sister and her husband with there baby, my mom and my aunt and uncle have all moved down to Florida. It's just gotten to much for them here.

I wish all of you good luck. It will come along eventually!

Keep your fingers crossed so I won't have to move upstairs from my inlaws, uggghhhhhh...pleeeaseeeeee
