Housing Situation

Re: Housing Situation

When my brother got married in 1997 we did NOT put his wife on the deed to the house I am living in...her name is still not on it, even though we LOVE SIL and they are happily married...since it's a family investment my dad suggested we leave her off incase down the road things turned for the worst...it's not a personal issue...but a protectment of investment. She never had an issue with it either.

Does the SIL who lives there have her name on the deed? Then you have a case with FH.

It's not his SIL, it's his sister and her husband living there. As far as I know, the only names on the deed are FH and his parents.

ooops...so then her hubby's name isn't on the deed...wait...and neither is the sister's? So she is just renting it then? There's an option for you...if FH's share is set up as an appt...you could rent it to offset the cost of the mortgage & get your own place?? just an idea...good luck!

Actually, I think it is the reverse of what you said.....his parents helped HIM get the house. He has hinted that it is possible that his parents will leave the house to him.....or maybe even a possible wedding gift??

I told him that I want to own something with him, that we should have OUR own house. He says I have a point with that. However, I don't know how he will be able to save to buy a place of our own when he's tied to paying off this current property over the next 10 years.

The sister is just renting. I already thought of your suggestion.......FH is adamant about not moving. He says we will not be able to get a place as nice as this one for the amount he is paying towards the mortgage.

Honestly, I think your FH is being selfish on this.

One thing many couples do when they get married is purchase real estate TOGETHER. Having two incomes helps towards getting a mortgage and makes payments easier. In fact, many people would not be able to afford a home on their own.

However, in your case, your FH is saying to you that he is keeping his own home, refusing to let you buy into it fairly, and also telling you that he won't live anywhere else. This means that you marry him and his house, which may always be HIS house.

In the meantime, you don't own any property (shared or otherwise), are failing to build equity into anything and missing out on an opportunity to invest in one of life's greatest investments (both emotionally and financially). You can't benefit from any increases in the fair market value and you can't take certain tax benefits unless you file a joint return. You're stuck - he benefits.

You're option of renting it out and letting him keep it as an investment is fair. The bottom line - I would insist that you buy a house together, like most couples do.
