question: so my photographer wants a $500 deposit, but wants either cash or money order, and then the balance I think is 3 weeks before the event. Is this pretty standard? Also, what do you think of the cash or money order thing? Is a certified check better? How do I prove then whether or not he cashed it? What do you guys think???

Re: how are you paying your vendors?
I paid cash deposit they give you a reciept and its on the contract. If they want money order then i guess its ok. My photog gets payment 3 weeks before also. HTH

Oh.. no to the certified check... you dont want that get a bank check instead. most banks dont certify personal checks anymore anyway. but a bank check is perfect. its a certified form of cash.

Re: how are you paying your vendors?
When you use a bank check, they take the $$ directly out of your checking account. The check will clear instantly when the vendor goes and deposits it because the money automatically came out of your bank account when you got the check from the bank.
Kerri, did I explain that correctly?

Re: how are you paying your vendors?
You mean I have to pay them?
I'm paying credit card for as much as we can. I like the idea of being able to dispute the charge, just in case. But otherwise, checks, at least it will show on bank statement as being cancelled. I'm very leery of cash, as well as payment being due prior to service being rendered, but I'm really paranoid.

My florist wants payment 3 weeks before also, so I guess some vendors aree like that. It's the whole cash thing that I'm a little worried about.

Re: how are you paying your vendors?
I dont understand whats leery about the cash thing for deposits? When you pay the deposit its on the contract i dont get it. All the vendors i paid with a deposit in cash its on my contract which was actually only the photog and the florist and it says Cash deposit and the amount on the contract. and they even give reciepts.

If it's a check they can still run with your deposit!! So I think if it says cash deposit on the contract like u said it should be fine

Most of the time if you're paying in cash it's because the vendor is cutting you a deal and not charing you tax on the entire amount.

Re: how are you paying your vendors?
Some we're paying cash and some we're paying by check.
My photographer doesn't get his final payment until I get my albums though. I give him smaller payments - one deposit when I booked, one 3 months before, one when I get my proofs and final payment when I pick up my albums.

Re: how are you paying your vendors?
if it's cash, most people don't report it on their taxes so it lowers their income for tax purposes.
make sure you get a receipt from them. we paid most of our deposits with cash and just kept the copy of their receipt.

Yeah, I am using checks for deposits, but possibly cash to pay balance, like the one of the above posts said to get a better price or not be charged all the tax, whatever. But, i'd be scared to pay the florist or photog in full before they show up or provide any services! I think we're paying balances the day of, have to chekc though.

Re: how are you paying your vendors?
Everything was paid with a check so I can track my payments.
As for the balance due 3 weeks before, my photograpger broke down our payments in 5 I think. But that last payment is due when we pick up the proofs. You shouldn't pay eveyrthing in full 'til you get everything.

Re: how are you paying your vendors?
and legally cash is just as safe as check if you get a receipt.....if you dont get a receipt then yes they can say ...I never got it but once there is a receipt it is just as good as a CC or check
