I have an Emigrant account that automatically deducts on each pay day. I make a nice amount of money on interest each month and I dont even have an opportunity to spend the money on whatever...it goes right in.

Re: How are YOU saving up for your wedding
we set aside money from every check, moved in together and lived in sin for 9 months before the wedding, and started packing my lunch everyday.
I never realized how much $ I spent just buying lunch everyday.

Re: How are YOU saving up for your wedding
the best thing i did was to open up an ING account- we have automatic savings that go into it, no matter what. also because there is not ATM card I really can't take money out of it on a whim.
having a long engagement, a little over 2yrs, has helped. we could never have paid for the wedding in one year. i have also scaled back spending on shopping, going out & even food. even the wedding has been scaled back from what we had originally dreamed up in the beginning.

FH mentioned something about ING the other day! Thanks!

Definitely have someone you know that has ING refer you if you do that (preferably me), they get $10 for referring you and you get $25 for joining

Re: How are YOU saving up for your wedding
I agree about ING. It really helped us save for the wedding. But just be aware of their transfer policy. It takes 2-3 business days to get your money. So make sure you move the money ahead of time.

Re: How are YOU saving up for your wedding
i have to agree about the ING account!
I made over $500 in interest in 2006 alone. . . I put a set amount every month and FH matches it . . .
i have to agree with the long engagement too - we are halfway to the wedding and halfway to our savings goal so its perfect!
also. . . we joined netflix lol it was like $10 a month and we never rent from blockbuster or go to the movies any more we just rent as many movies as we want and that is our big weekend - a few six packs and some movies
we only go out to eat for events like birthdays or anniversaries
BUT we also made sure we saved a little - so instead of our usual fla vacation we are going to mohegan sun for a weekend otherwise we would go nuts with NOTHING for two years!
hth!

Re: How are YOU saving up for your wedding
Wow 'tilde! That's awesome! I feel so stupid now for opening a CD! In 9 months, it'll grow by $71!
But wait.... what's the interest rate on those ING accounts? Less than 5%? I guess it's especially effective when you add money to it monthly. The CD that I opened was just a one time 9 month thing.
I was planning on opening another next month, but I think I'll start the ING account with FH!

Re: How are YOU saving up for your wedding
Fi and I opened up a joint savings account. Basically what I did was try to estimate what our wedding would cost, and I actually went a little over because theres always extra costs you don't realize now. So I took the amount of time we have until our wedding, divided that by the amount and saw how much we have to put away each month. I then took the amount we have to put away each month and divided that in half so I can know how much to put away each paycheck since we both get paid every two weeks. This way I know exactly how much I put in savings when I get paid, and the rest I can spend it without having to worry. Also, just making sure I don't spend more than what is left for myself to spend freely.

Re: How are YOU saving up for your wedding
We had an ING account (now we use Emigrant because the interest rate is higher than ING now). We put as much money as we could every month to save. To be honest, we put a lot each month and spent little. We put work bonuses, etc. into the account to go towards the wedding. It was very important to us to not owe (or owe as little as possible) on the wedding. We wanted anything that we got for the wedding to be able to go towards saving for a down payment on a house. We also had a long engagement.
Hope that helps. Good Luck.

Re: How are YOU saving up for your wedding
We just got our first apartment together in July so that has made it even harder to save, especially being that we are paying for this all ourselves. So to save we stay in a lot and watch whatever is on cable that we all know is ridiculously expensive. We also used to always go on a cruise in January...now that is out. I've noticed now I really appreciate being able to go out to eat or go to a movie. It's a real treat. I won't miss all these weddings bills though.
