So I found this really cheap dj. He said we can give him both a list of songs to play and not to play at the wedding. If he plays the songs we want... how bad can he be? Think its worth going the cheap route?

Re: How bad can a cheap dj be?
eh. I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand all DJ's have to start somewhere. I have a friend who used to DJ sorority formals really cheap and now he's a celebrity DJ traveling around the country.
On the other hand this is your wedding and there are no 2nd chances. There are TONS of people around who are DJ's. TONS and MOST of them aren't reputable.
Your best bet is to speak to past clients. Also talk to your RH to see if they've ever heard/worked with them. Also ask your other vendors about them. Most vendors have worked with one another.

Personally music and entertainment is the last thing I would skimp on.

Agreed -- music and food are the two most important things at a wedding!

Is this a company? Are they registered with BBB? I would check credentials. see if there are bbb complaints and any other bad reviews out there.

JMO the DJ does more then just play music. He is the one that gets your guest up and dancing which makes your guest have a memorable night! I am on a VERY VERY strict budget and have skimped on ALOT but the DJ is one thing I wouldn't skimp. Does he have an upbeat personality?? Will he excite your guest and get them up on the floor. If so then go for it if not keep looking!!
You still have PLENTY of time to shop around!! Not sure what your budget is but I'm paying $1,500.00 for DJ and MC with ceremony music, giveaways basic lighting for 7 hours.

noo... we almost went for a really cheap one. but i read so many stories of how DJ can go wrong. forget song lists, late, broken equipment, didn't test beforehand... it's quite a long list. so we ended up going to a more reputable one with just a couple of hundred extra. I searched for reviews here and theirs is almost 100% positive. i think you can still find decent DJ at very affordable price.

also if the music is good i dont need a dj/mc to get my guests up the music speaks for itself with my family friends...........i hate when djs say something to try to make the guests dance and my guests hate it too

A reputable company usually has a backup DJ in case anything happens with the DJ you initially chose like for instance they have extras DJ's on hand, extra equipment and my company for instance is going to have a backup DJ with sound system close by my RH in case the DJ i chose is running late or his van breaks down.
This is what you pay extra for peace of mind.

To add to some of the other comments, remember a reputable dj exerts professionalism. You don't want someone who may be rude, wants to drink all nite, disappears to talk on his cell phone, etc. Seriously, I've seen those things at a wedding, not pretty!

ITA. I think you should spend a few extra hundred dollars on a reputable and professional DJ, that way you can feel comfortable on your wedding day and not be stressing/filled with doubt.

Re: How bad can a cheap dj be?
If you don´t need to many extras you can find a good dj for less than 1K. Personally I´m trying to keep it to $800.
The price doesn´t necesarily mean the quality is good or bad. Like has been said you have to ask around and get feedback. Asking them about backup equipment and such is important. There are some personal owned businesses that have been around for years that because of the economy are giving out great rates right now.
My sister found a great potential one. They are four people who have been around for years. They back each other up. She said over the phone he sounded good but she is going to meet him end of September and go see them acutally play.
Its really important to see their personality and what others have to say. It also depends on your guests. For instance with my mother there, I will not need an MC at all!! Especially since the rest of my family all like to dance as well. If you feel you need the extra push then make sure there is an MC too.

While music and food are important the photographer is the thing to not skimp on, those are your memories for life.
I would say it really depends on what you are looking for in a DJ. If you are looking for an MC to get everyone out of their chairs and what not then don't skimp but if u just want him to play music all night with nothing extra added then no worries. Try and see if you can get reviews. Maybe ask if he has references as well. That other girl is right...you don't get any do-overs. Also meet with other DJs before making that DEF decision.

Re: How bad can a cheap dj be?
OK perfect example:
Went to a wedding where the DJ was HORRIBLE. NO ONE danced all night and it didnt matter what he played. He started to speed up slow songs and slow down fast songs SERIOUSLY! And when he made annoucements NO ONE listened to him, he had ZERO presence. When they did their entrance you could barely hear him AND like I said no one really paid attention so the vibe in the room was DEAD. EVERYONE talks about how he ruined that reception because no one was into it. The music was terrible and he played all the music that would normally get people up.
The PARTY is what its ALL about. Its what people will be talking about. People still come up to me to tell me how SICK my party was. Even my DJ was like honestly that one is up there for me, top 3 of best parties I did and was apart of. WILL DEF be showcasing it when I talk to other clients! Like the DJ IS VERY VERY VERY IMPORTANT and should NOT be skimped on AT ALL.
I can HIGHLY RECCOMEND my DJ and hes NOT expensive, he was reasonable and he was EXTREMELY GOOD! He played everything I wanted him to, hes got a GREAT personality, he talks enough (not too much, not too little) because THAT is important as well. FM me if you want more info =))) He just started his own business and hes AMAZING!!!!!!! One of my FAV vendors to work with from my day! He made it PERFECT!

ITA, even the best and most expensive DJs can work with you and have affordable packages if you don't want all the bells and whistles. I wouldn't skimp on this. It's a huge part of the success of your wedding. People always talk about the food and music.

Here is my problem. I'm over budget. I have to skimp some where. Every one always says:
Don't skimp on food.... Don't skimp on alcohol... Don't skimp on the photographer... Don't skimp on the videographer... Don't skimp on the DJ... Don't skimp on your dress....
BECAUSE YOU CAN ONLY DO IT ONCE....
So my question is what do you skimp on????

That's your opinion. I personally wouldn't want to spend thousands of dollars on a party where no one is having a good time. Yes photo is very importand and I didn't skimp on that either but this was my opinion and I stand by it. Music and a good Dj can MAKE OR BREAK A PARTY. I have seen it
