So I found this really cheap dj. He said we can give him both a list of songs to play and not to play at the wedding. If he plays the songs we want... how bad can he be? Think its worth going the cheap route?

Can you get referrals from this person? Maybe if you speak to past brides and they all rave about them then it will be worth it.

Personally music and entertainment is the last thing I would skimp on.
Agreed -- music and food are the two most important things at a wedding!
Here is my problem. I'm over budget. I have to skimp some where. Every one always says:
Don't skimp on food.... Don't skimp on alcohol... Don't skimp on the photographer... Don't skimp on the videographer... Don't skimp on the DJ... Don't skimp on your dress....
BECAUSE YOU CAN ONLY DO IT ONCE....
So my question is what do you skimp on????
food, alcohol, photo, music - dont skimp
dress, invited, video (this is your preference), favors, etc etc - skimp

If you don´t need to many extras you can find a good dj for less than 1K. Personally I´m trying to keep it to $800.
The price doesn´t necesarily mean the quality is good or bad. Like has been said you have to ask around and get feedback. Asking them about backup equipment and such is important. There are some personal owned businesses that have been around for years that because of the economy are giving out great rates right now.
My sister found a great potential one. They are four people who have been around for years. They back each other up. She said over the phone he sounded good but she is going to meet him end of September and go see them acutally play.
Its really important to see their personality and what others have to say. It also depends on your guests. For instance with my mother there, I will not need an MC at all!! Especially since the rest of my family all like to dance as well. If you feel you need the extra push then make sure there is an MC too.
Did you find a DJ for that much?? I could do $800

DIY invites... menus... programs... etc Do you need limo's or are you getting married at the RH DIY card box Non expensicve DOJ favors, do a donation it can be much cheaper and tax deductable
There are tons of ways to cut back. Yes the ones you mentioned are the biggies so it does make it a little harder.
So as far as DJ- cut back on lighting or give aways photog- a lot of people pass on the album (i wouldn't do this but some people do and have it made at a later date) Video- is that a necessity to you? Food- Does your hall offer 7 choices maybe make it 5 or 3 your guests won't know the difference Alcohol- idk how to cut that back other than not the premium tops shelf. Your dress- I would never skimp on you wedding gown.
I hope you don't find this condicending it is sincerly just tips on how you can hopefully budget all the things in you want.

Re: How bad can a cheap dj be?
Personally, I wouldn't skimp on a DJ. I've been to three parties recently and at each one of them, I've walked out saying, 'there's a DJ off the list!' There is always the concern of equipment not working or forgetting a song...I'm more concerned about the mixing and appropriateness of both song length and order. I was at a party the other night and the DJ literally played every song from START TO FINISH! I know this doesn't sound annoying, but when you have 8-9 minute 'dance tracks' of certain songs, you expect to only hear half of it because it starts to get boring. Also, the DJ needs to recognize when to cut a song if no one is dancing! Then I was at a party where the DJ played 30 seconds of each song! It was so annoying! You couldn't get into anything because it wasn't on for long enough. Do your research and make sure you hear your DJ play! If they are 'cheap,' don't use them, but if they are inexpensive, go ahead!

Re: How bad can a cheap dj be?
I think people associate cheap in price with cheap quality when that is not always the case. Id check with the BBB, other brides, etc. My hesitation in a DJ that is not well know is the DJ will have a mic and can say whatever he/she wants and they can play whatever he/she wants.

Re: How bad can a cheap dj be?
I went to a wedding. where teh dj was like a 16 year old boy- with spikey hair.. and he literally put on the 'wedding mix' hit play.. walked away.. and oh.. the same song came on TWICE!!! (and it was a BAD song) haha..
unless you dont mind hearing every generic song played on z100- and you can afford to spend extra.. try to (bc ppl will notice)

Re: How bad can a cheap dj be?
You never know- I went to a wedding this summer and the DJ kept messing up. The music would just stop for no reason- and at one point it was silent for over 10 minutes. The music also skipped during the Father-daughter dance. Be careful!

Re: How bad can a cheap dj be?
Yea I wouldnt go cheap on the DJ. I skimped by going cheap on my dress. To me, I didnt see the point on spending $3000 for a dress I wear only once, but that is just me.
See if you can maybe borrow a friends or family members veil to save some money. (I know they can get expensive and should have done this!) Borrow your DOJ, things like that.
My advice, do not skimp on DJ or photography!

Re: How bad can a cheap dj be?
I have to weigh in on this...One of the most fun weddings I attended recently, I hated my food (mainly because it was a really gross attempt at a vegetarian plate), but I had so much fun, I didn't even get a chance to eat I was dancing all night.
I went to another wedding where the food was good, no expense was spared, but the band really didn't pick the right songs and didn't get people dancing..it was just ok.
I think it's fine to go with someone cheaper, maybe not as well known, but you need to make sure they're reputable. They might borrow their equipment and not own it, which can cause problems, they might not have backup equipment, and they might not even show up. I'd rather stick to a DJ who is at least a somewhat known quantity to me, even though it doesn't have to be the biggest name out there.
You can save money by eschewing lighting, instruments, etc, and by sticking to one person as DJ/MC. I think you need a reputable person though. I think to some extent a lot of thngs are forgivable at a wedding...the drinks are a little weak, the food is overcooked, etc, people can forget that if they're dancing, but if the music is bad, or worse, if there's no music, it's going to be a disaster!

Re: How bad can a cheap dj be?
I say that the dj might be very talented but they are just starting out and that is no reason to discriminate. Ask him if you can attend a showcase tht they are doing whether they spin at a bar or club or if they have an actual showcase where you can see them live. If that is not an option, ask them if they have video of a party that they have done that you can watch, then ask if they have any larger parties or weddings that they've done. If they do not have ANYTHING to show you, then I would be skeptical.

Re: How bad can a cheap dj be?
I think it depends on how important music is for the both of you. If you want to really hype it up for your reception then this is certainly not an expense to skimp on. Bad music can literally kill a party. Not just weddings but I'm sure all of us have been to parties where the music is bad as well as the food/drinks. And you feel like running out of there. Unless, your guests don't care much about music or they're not the dancing type, then it's fine. Honestly, DJ's are inexpensive these days since they're using modernized technology- Boss Sounds, IPOD, etc. Most of the profits come from OT, lighting, sound effects...I say skip the cheap DJ and go with someone you trust and knows music if you want your reception to rock.

I agree 150%!! The 2 deciding factors for whether a wedding rocks or sux is the food and the dj! If people aint dancing and hearin good music they wont have a good timeee!! It is sooo important if the dj is good it determines everything even what time ppl leave.. weddings I been to where I didnt like the dj, I was looking to leave after the cake, if the DJ is good, you wanna stay and party!!
