Mold?

We went to look at a house yesterday.. Loved it so much that we went back later in the day to put in a bid... but we took DH's parents with us to see it.
They were looking around the house and noticed there was mold in the basement. At one time there was a leak in the ceiling.
Anyway Dh's parents asked us to take a few days to think about it... they say that mold can be very bad!
Is this true? Is there an easy way to get rid of it?
Thanks

Have an engineer come in and look. Mold can grow like wildfire but perhaps this house just started to get mold. If this is your dream house, I would have the engineer comein.

Yes mold can be very, very bad. My sister's apt has mold in it and the landlord just paints over it no matter how much they complain (meanwhile the room where the mold is needs to be gutted, she had the board of health in and e/t, I think they're running tests on it). It smells bad and can be dangerous to your health. Do a search on google and put in what color mold it was. If you're going to take the apt make sure the landlord does s/t about the mold. But make sure he actually fixes the problem and doesn't just cover it up. Good luck!

Also, I should add that there was a leak in the room where the mold is in my sister's apt.

ETA: Sorry! For some reason I thought you were looking at an apt! Definitely have a professional look at it to see what you can do to remove it but if there was a leak it's more work than just like if there's some mold in your shower!

From what they told us... There was a leak in the bathroom that they fixed, but they didnt realize the mold until they ripped the tiles off the ceiling to replace them. So there is no more leak, but I am wondering if there is a way to get rid of the mold already there.
Is that what the engineer does?

we have a little entranceway to our co-op, and there was a leak from outside....and we found mold underneath the wallpaper in there (after we bought it of course). we scraped it off (when i say we, i mean my husband ) and luckily there wasn't too much of it, so we were able to paint over it

Re: How bad is

It depends how much and what type of mold. I found mold in one of my closets behind wallpaper (the wall backs the shower, and there was a leak there many years ago). It was on one panel and had not spread and had not taken over the whole wall. With bleach it was easily killed and cleaned off, and has not returned. If it is in the ceiling, making it in between the floor boards of the first floor it might be more challenging. You need an engineer to come in and look at it. They will be able to tell how much damage is done and possibly what type of mold. There is a type of mold that is toxic if breathed in long enough. If your bid is accepted and you bring in the engineer and the mold damage is extensive, they will tell you immediately: you can then either back out or possibly renegotiate the price.

Good luck

Be very careful! My close friend bought a house with mold in the basement...WELL...they found out that it is EXTREMELY dangerous and could be potentially fatal to her family so they had to get it all removed and $25,000 later they finally have a safe basement...nevermind a lawsuit to the previous owners who tried to paint over it.

DEFINITELY have it checked out before purchasing!

Did you have this tested? This could be potentially fatal. Be careful. Good luck!
