How did you...

How did you...

Start looking for halls? FH and I want to start looking, but how did you know what you liked? Who to start with? Did it go by price?

I am sure this is easier than I am making it, but I just don't know!

Thanks Girls!!

We went to bridal expos and thru theses we learned what we liked and didn't like.

We knew we wanted something on the water, so that's where we started.
Think of the places you know and start there or there is a page on here that lists a ton of halls, I think it's under the 'Planning' section... that's a great place to start if you don't know how to go about doing it.
Also, definitely call before you go and make sure they are able to see you.
HTH... Good luck!

Re: How did you...

What we did was make a list of the places we wanted to look at...there is a great book/magazine called Locations that gives the size, price, sometimes even the menu of most halls in LI, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Westchester, and MAnhattan. That was really helpful...then we started making appointmets at like our top 5.

Re: How did you...

we went to places my now MIL had been to over the years, some places she asked friends for recommendations and ironically, after one place couldn't see us (i don't remember where) she went home and somehow found the swan club online...so we went there...i fell in love with the grounds.

so between past experiences, the internet and word of mouth...and one place we drove by, turned around and went in...you'll get a lot...but i think this feature of LIW is helpful as well....

(though it doesn't contain EVERY hall)

LIW link

you can select certain criteria and then only look at the ones that fit your needs instead of the whole list.

Re: How did you...

I bought Wedding Sites and Services magazine. FH & I flipped through all the LI venues and selected a bunch from the small pictures. Then I called them up to see if my date was available and what their minimum guarantee was. I eliminated more than 1/2 that way. Then I went and visited the rest. I looked at 25 halls total before selecting.

Basically you have to figure what the important things are to you: for us it was budget, capacity, beautiful grounds; we are getting married at the hall so I wanted a separate location for the ceremony, and convenient location for the majority of our guests.

Oh and check this website for halls they offer so much info:

Thank you Girls!!

I did look at the receptions hall list here and already went 'uh oh'

I just don't want to go look at a place, fall in love with it then realize that we can't afford it or soemthing like that.

Thank you again!!!

Re: How did you...

I looked at a couple of different ones, with different 'atmospheres' i.e. water view, parklike, mansion, etc. to see which one I liked better.

I had my heart set on waterview, but then I actually ended up liking more places with beautiful grounds.

If price is a concern, then don't look at places (i.e. Oheka) that our way out of your range, because you will end up liking something you can't afford.

We also wanted to choose a place that was different than any of our friends/family members used for their reception.

Re: How did you...

I first googled wedding halls.. and kind of went for the decor look I wanted..then from there picked a few and made appointments, and then went back to searching the net.

It is very easy. Believe me.. you will know your hall when you see it.

Good Luck and Make it fun!
