I'm doing Mr. & Mrs. John Smith on the evelope...
on the inner envelope I'm writing it less formally..
Jane & John... and listing all that are invited, if its a whole family..

I addressed everyone the same way, whether they were friends, family, coworkers, etc.

Married couples: Mr & Mrs
Singles: Mr. or Ms
Couple who lives together: Mr. John Doe and Ms. Jane Smith (in these cases, i usually put the person i was friends with first and their bf/gf second)

All inner envelopes were informal... i.e. Aunt Jane and Uncle Joe, Grandma & Grandpa, etc.

HTH!

I am not having an outer folder - And when you say the person you know first how would you do that with married couples if I know the girl ?

I did Mr. and Mrs. John Smith for all my envelopes - even close friends, even close girl friends who are married.

I have a really stupid question...when you say inner envelope, you mean the response envelope, right? So the address would be you filling in the return address for them?

Some invitations come with two envelopes covering the actual invitation (not the RSVP card). The outer envelope is the one with the stamp on it, and then there's another envelope inside that. The invitation is actually inside the second envelope.

I skipped the inner envelope idea and just had one.

Most envelopes Have the outer the inner and then all the cards and inserts/ reply envelope - but mine is like a pocket folder and Banded with ribbon so it does not need an inner envelope that is more to keep everything together - Not all invites need an inner.

When it's a married couple, it's always Mr. & Mrs....

Married with same last name is traditional:

Mr. and Mrs. John Smith

Married with different last names list the woman first with the 'Ms.' honorific, both names linked by 'and' or ampersand:

Ms. Jane Doe and Mr. John Smith

Couples who are dating but not living together: Address the outside to the person you know better. The inside envelope should consist of both names on separate lines, no 'and' or ampersand, woman first regardless of who you know better. If not using inner envelopes, use what would have been done on the inner on envelopes on the outer.

Outer (knowing male better): Mr. John Smith
Inner (or outer if not using inner):

Ms. Jane Doe
Mr. John Smith

Couples dating and living together: Address to both, separate lines, no 'and' or ampersand, woman first regardless of who you know better.

Outer:
Ms. Jane Doe
Mr. John Smith

Inner: same as above.
