I was always happy about it because I had a name that was hard to pronounce and my married name is very easy....but it hit me when I was dancing with my dad at our wedding when the first thing he says is, 'so are you going to change your name right away?' That made me feel bad. When I went to change my name on my license, and get a new one all together since i moved to Ohio, the DMV took my NY license and I lost it. I was hysterical...lol...I felt like a part of me was taken away...along with my NY identity.
I was just thinking about this today while at work staring at the long list of reports i have to write, and decided to share the topic.

I can see it from both sides of the coin, but I was extremely happy to change mine. I have a shorter, easily pronounceable last name and I like sharing it with DH. It was the right decision for me and I was never upset about it.

I haven't changed my last name and don't plan to. Socially I don't mind being called Mrs. M____ but legally I'm still Gina S______________.
So I guess the answer would be that I would be upset changing my name?

Re: How did you feel about chaning your last name?
I felt more of a conflict about my name and my identity when I was 13 and my parents got divorced. I kept my last name and just added DH's legally, but am completely adopting his last name for everyday use. It's longer than mine, but it's ok. I still have to spell it, and it's 3 syllables instead of 1, but he's so happy I took his name, it's worth it all.
A name doesn't make the person. Your identity is so much more than the name you sign. You haven't lost who you 'were' -- don't worry! But it's normal to feel emotional at times of big change like this. Feel better!

Re: How did you feel about chaning your last name?
Not fantastic. I LOVE my name!! I feel bad that it is lost with me. The main reason I had and still have trouble with my new last name, is the way my IL's and their family choose to pronounce it. The name is Ciampi, and in Italian it's pronounced Chee-ahm-pee. His family Americanized it generations ago, but they never dropped the 'i', so they pronounce our name 'Kam-pee' (like scampi). Now, my mother is not from here (like, born in Argentina) and her ancestry is Italian (hence my Italian asss first name) and she speaks fluent Italian. My Godfather is a Marquis in the Italian royal family (which doesn't really mean anything anymore lol). Basically my point is, there are Italians around me who have been giving me SUCH A FREAKING hard time about the mispronunciation of the name that my FH (at the time, now DH) and I had to sit down with my mom and dad (dad was there for support) and explain that she HAD to stop pronouncing it how SHE wanted (even though it is technically correct) and start pronouncing it how his family does, and how I am going to have to.
I am still torn. I wish they would just drop the 'i'. I hate mispronouncing the name as well! I just don't have the balls to tell my FIL that we are now going to start pronouncing his name 'right'. AHHH Sorry so long but you asked! This was a sore sore sore subject for me!

I love my new last name (Garcia) because it is so common and everyone knows how to pronounce it and spell it. My maiden name is Murtha and I always have to spell it and I used to get called 'Martha' ALLLLLLL the time!

Re: How did you feel about chaning your last name?
I never doubted changing my last name; in a way, Dh's is easier than mine.
But I do see what some of you are saying. After having the same name for 32 years, it was a bit hard.
When I went to change my professional license (I am a CPA), it asked if I wanted a new parchment with my new name. I would have loved to, but you have to surrender your old one. Since I got my license pre-marriage, I opted to keep it.
All I know is that no matter what my last name is, I will always be a 'insert maiden name here' at heart; some may question why I say that, but when I look at my family compared to DH's (long sad history here), our families are nowhere near alike.

Re: How did you feel about chaning your last name?
I was really excited to change my name. It made me officially feel married & like DH's wife. If that makes any sense. It was a little bittersweet though. I was so excited for that, but kinda sad about retiring my last name. DH has a short Irish name, I had a long Italian name. I feel like people don't know I am Italian anymore. I know I totally look Italian but it feels weird to walk around w/ an Irish last name when I look far from it. Now having had my new last name for a year I am use to it. Sometimes it is still a little sad. All my cousins are boys for the most part so they will always carry the name. My female cousins are not married yet so I am the only one without the last name now.

I haven't changed mine yet, but I will be. I'm a little sad that my last name will die now because there's just girls in my family. But overall I really like my new last name, it's definitely different, and not a super common Greek name, and it goes really well with my first name. I went from having a super Roman name to a super Greek name when I use my full first name.

Call me super traditional, but I always knew I would take my husband's last name.. I didn't feel at all like I was losing my identity, it feels really natural.
The only thing that stinks is that my old last name was super common and easy to spell and pronounce, and my new last name you have to spell it out for people-and everyone mis-pronounces and says, 'Jen Ferrari??'

I hyphenated my name and for some reason it seems to confuse so many people (mostly Dhs family). I am not MRS. Godin my last name does not start with a G and no I do not feel bad in any way about it.

Re: How did you feel about chaning your last name?
Ah this one was a difficult one for me.
I love my maiden name. It's italian, unique and all the Italians know who my family is based on my last name because they were big in the Italian society. Now, I had this debate with my husband. He doesn't like that I hyphenated. AT ALL. He was really pissed about it. I am not on board with the whole name change thing. My dad has one son who is never getting married and all his daughters changed their names. I don't want to. I like my last name. I don't mind just adding DH's name to mine. So I had a problem with the name change big time. My maiden name is an important part of who I am.

I haven't changed it yet. As an only child i have to admit its hard. But I will do it. I know its important to DH. But I LOVE my last name, so it makes me sad.

Re: How did you feel about chaning your last name?
I still haven['t changed it. Really I'm just too lazy to start the whole process.
Plus since we’re looking for a house all of my checks and tax returns have my old last name, so I was afraid changing it would mess all that up.

I feel the same way! But I actually changed my name from
Kathleen Mary Reilly to Kathleen Reilly Mulligan
This way if stuff was in my maiden name it wouldn't be a problem. And by the way girls - I'm so lazy. I just got my new DL today with this name on it.

Re: How did you feel about chaning your last name?
I am changing it.. but its hard and i am actaually thinking of hyphenating it....but on the marriage license, i dropped my maiden name.
I am an only child and my dad passed away.. so i feel like my last name is all i have left.... plus my maiden name is italian and i am proud of my 100% italian heritage. however, i want to share the same name as dh. I want to have the same last name as my kids. It solidifies us as a family. I know that isn't true but that is how I feel. His last name is german... no italian anywhere...

I feel the same way only I am Irish and DH is Italian. I am so proud of my Irish background and I don't look even remotely Italian! I will change it (if I ever get to the DMV) but I know a part of me will be really sad. I am thinking of taking my maiden name as a second middle name just so it will stay a part of my legal name but I wont have to include it on my documents and stuff.
