How did you feel about chaning your last name?

Original post by Jenth

I was always happy about it because I had a name that was hard to pronounce and my married name is very easy....but it hit me when I was dancing with my dad at our wedding when the first thing he says is, 'so are you going to change your name right away?' That made me feel bad. When I went to change my name on my license, and get a new one all together since i moved to Ohio, the DMV took my NY license and I lost it. I was hysterical...lol...I felt like a part of me was taken away...along with my NY identity.

I was just thinking about this today while at work staring at the long list of reports i have to write, and decided to share the topic.

I was very sad to lose my name

I never doubted that I would take him name....and DH was not negotiating this either.

It's definitely a change and tough at times but I'm getting used to it, I do love his name and LOVE seeing the skirt around our Christmas tree that says 'Castañeda Family'.

I'm sooo glad to see that I am not the only one that was upset by this. I only just did this, and I just got my new ss card and new dl in the mail, and was a little weirded out. I cried the night before I went to do it all, it is strange to have a new name after 25 years, but I am slowly gettig used to it, and it is nice to see the all of the christmas cards coming in addressed to Mr. & Mrs. and now it really is my last name.

I haven't changed it yet. As an only child i have to admit its hard. But I will do it. I know its important to DH. But I LOVE my last name, so it makes me sad.

I'm an only child too Michelle!

I loved my last name, it was just a part of who I am and its not very common so I loved that about it.
But I also wanted my DH last name.
I am very traditional and couldnt wait to change it but I do miss my maiden name sometimes. I wish I could have hyphenated it but
Jeanette Bodenmiller-Segal was just too long

It was hard for me....I love my maiden name, so I just hyphenated it! I use my married name for everything though.

I can't wait to change my last name. My last name constantly get mispronounced and mis-spelled. FH's last name is just shorter and easier to spell.

I just hope its not too much trouble to get my new name changed on the attorney records.

My last name was Asian because my father had an Asian step-father. I'm Puerto Rican, Russian, and Polish and have had to explain the story to literally EVERY SINGLE PERSON I have ever met. I always said if I never got married I'd change my last name eventually because besides the fact that my step-grandfather is a pr*ck, I hate having to explain it to everyone.

On a less personal note, I like the idea of taking DHs last name because it makes me feel that much more like we're a unit and a family. Plus when we have kids it'll be less confusing (this is the whole reason why my dad had to change his name in the first place).

I haven't changed my last name and don't plan to. Socially I don't mind being called Mrs. M____ but legally I'm still Gina S______________.

So I guess the answer would be that I would be upset changing my name?

I agree. I am not changing my name. I have had my last name for too long and the headache to change everything would be too much for me right now.

My original last name is cool... my new last name is cool. I don't mind either way!!

I did accidentally hyphenate it... which i don't want actually.

I don't have too too many ties to my last name.... my family is small and parents are divorced, we lost touch with one side basically and that would be the side that my last name comes from.... so I don't have too many lingering feelings towards it. Sure I grew up with it and was always known as Kerri (last name).... so in that sense I'm just sooo used to it.... but I like change!!! :D Plus it doesn't hurt that I gained a pretty cool name!! I love it!!!

I think for some of you who are missing your name or having a hard time dealing with losing it... consider naming one of your kids either your last name (if it flows) or even as a middle name. I see that done a lot and I think it's pretty cool!!!

EDIT to add that with all that being said... i still havent gotten my arse to the ss office!!!!

I know how you feel. I have been married 3 months and I just went to SS office to officially change my name and I felt funny. MY DH gets mad every time he calls me at work and I haven't changed my name but he doesn't understand. But I'm getting used to my new name

I'm an only child so I hyphenated. That way I could have my daddy's name and my husband's name.

i don't really want to lose my identity ... but i suppose i prefer to have his name to make life easier (mostly for any future-kids we may have).

I will probably be turning my maiden name into my middle name (i don't have a middle name so it's not like i'll be losing that)

I wanted to change my name only b/c I hated my last name...I always got made fun of bc it is silly. However, I still have not changed everything over. I started with the SS and work stuff but haven't made it to the DMV...Ughh it is such a process!

I never had a moment hesitation actually.

My Husbands last name is great and so I felt comfortable doing it.

It *IS* hard though. I have been been me for 37 years. Its hard to just say 'Ok, here is a new last name'. But I decided that its REALLY what I wanted.

I got SS and IRS changed. Now once I get my drivers licence changed THEN I can finish everythjing else!!!
