How do I clean my ring?
I plan to get my engagement ring steam cleaned ever few months or so but how do I clean it in between? It's a round diamond with baguettes set in platinum, 4 prong. I don't want to use anything that might weaken the setting.
I've never had any platinum jewelry before so I'm not sure if there is something special I should use.
Someone told me to use ammonia but that just doesn't sound right.
Thanks for your help.

Re: How do I clean my ring?
I bought a silver/white gold/platinum jewelry cleaner for like $5 at the jewelry counter at Target! My ring is platinum also and less than a minute in the solution it shines beautifully!

Re: How do I clean my ring?
My jeweler told me that platinum scratches very easily and is very hard to polish. He suggested that I only soak it in a cup of very hot water. Never use any brushes of anything abrasive, b/c it can scratch the ring.

Re: How do I clean my ring?
I have a plantinum ring that is about 100 years old and does not have one scratch on it. I too bough a sonic cleaner from Walmart and it works great. But to clean the diamond good I use a toothbrush.Bridget

Re: How do I clean my ring?
Really? I heard that any kind of detergent like Dawn would leave a residue?I clean mine in jewlery cleaner that comes in a little red jar. you just drop it in for a 10-15 seconds, but sometimes I like to let it soak in there for a while.

Re: How do I clean my ring?
I use 1 part ammonia, 1 part dish soap and 3 parts water (warm works well too). I use a small jewelry cleaner brush for the underside of the setting.I've heard different things about platinum. I've heard it's the hardest and I've heard it's the softest (that's why you see so many Plat rings with filigree/scroll work/etc). I don't know who is right or who is wrong.

Re: How do I clean my ring?
My ring is not platinum but the jeweler did explain to me about how it is both hard and soft. The metal is soft and you will see what look like scratches very easily (which is why you should not use a toothbrush). However, unlike gold, they are not actually scratches - the metal actually moves around but doesn't come off (with gold, if you see a scratch, the metal actually came off). So, it's soft because it moves but hard because pieces do not come off. Does that make sense? Anyway, NO toothbrush!!!

Re: How do I clean my ring?
Try typing in 'Cleaning an Engagement Ring' in yahoo search...I find that if you go to actual jewlers websites (ie Scott Kay) they will tell you about ultrasonic cleaners or jewelers brushes which I am sure you can buy direct from them at exorbitant prices.Edited to say perhaps the toothbrush is good for the diamond and not the band.
Excerpts from websites:
Pricescope.com (same thing is on diamonds-diamonds.info)
Engagement rings - Care and Cleaning
...
Diamonds like being cleaned in any household cleaners like window cleaners and dishwashing liquid with a dash of ammonia (if you can stand the smell). The best results are obtained by adding some boiling water to the solution in a cup. Give the diamonds a clean with an old toothbrush and then have a good rinse with the PLUG IN the sink! Dry with some tissue paper.
Bestbuyjeweler.com
...Chlorine can damage and discolor the mounting on your diamond jewelry. Keep your diamond away from chlorine bleach or other household chemicals. You should also remove your diamond jewelry before entering a chlorinated pool or hot tub.
Clean your diamonds regularly using a commercial jewelry cleaner, a mix of ammonia and water, or a mild detergent. Dip the jewelry into the solution and use a soft brush to dislodge dust or dirt from under the setting.

Q: How do I care for my diamond? I wear it on a daily basis and never take it off. Will the brilliance deteriorate?
-Eunice Lim, Singapore'
A: 'No, you will not affect the brilliance of the diamond by wearing it everyday. Diamonds do collect oils from fingers, lotions, cosmetics, and some surface dirt, and need regular cleaning to look their best. A cleaning solution purchased from a Jewelry store would be great, or you can clean it using some common household cleaners. Mix together one part mild dish-washing soap (in the US, I would recommend Ivory, by Procter and Gamble, but I'm not sure what you may have available), or an antibacterial-type hand soap, and 3 parts water in a container. Put your diamond jewelry in the container and let it soak for at least 15 minutes. Use a toothbrush with soft bristles to gently 'scrub' the diamond, especially the underside. Then rinse it off well, and let it dry on a soft cloth or paper towel. DO NOT use any cleaning solutions that may contain bleach, because chlorine can affect the metal that the diamond is set into. Although diamonds are very durable, they are not completely impervious to wear, and many mountings are not sturdy enough to withstand heavy wear-and-tear.
