How do I get pre-approved?

I'm clueless, and just starting to think about looking for a home. How do I get a pre-approved letter? Do I get this from my own bank?

you don't need it to look, but yes, you'd go to the institution were you are getting your mortgage.. Just call them up and tell them that you need a pre-approval letter.. They'll ask you for info

shop around for the cheapest % rate

Thanks so much. One more question. Once I get a pre-approved letter, am I committed to getting my mortgage from them? Because what if rates change by the time we find a place?
