how do I request no extra guest on invite

how do I request no extra guest on invite

We have to stick to a number of guest, and I am already over with my initial invites. How do I keep people from inviting random guest, like dates. We are fine with people who are married or people we know are dating for a while and we have met them, but I know people have a tendancy to just go and find a date for weddings.

That's going to be very difficult since most adults bring dates- unless you just don't put 'and Guest' on the the invites..but I personally would be insulted JMHO...

When addressing the invites, just put the invitees name on the envelope, no '& guest'.

That should be pretty clear, as most people know that it's only for the person on the envelope. However, be prepared for people who will tack on a guest or two!

For those people that I invited to the reception and I anticipated that they would do something like that... I filled in their name on the response card and put the number invited in parentheses after that. Now I know Martha Stewart or Emily Post would roll over and die...some may say it is bad etiquette...but I did not want to deal with that kind of nonsense. So I did this for the folks who I knew had the potential to 'add a guest.' And it worked!

Another option is...
I received an invitation once and at the bottom of the response card was a note that said...
'Attendance at the reception is by invitation and confirmation only.'

Not sure what to tell you - we threw a big party once and didnt have the room for all the '& guests' - so we left that out of the invitations of anyone not married or engaged.... THEY STILL brought & Guest!!!
Luckily we had a few more 'no''s rsvp and we had the room but we cut it really close

Unfortunately, reguardless of what you write, some people will still do the opposite. I would just not add 'and guest' to those invites & deal w/ what happens as you get your responses. We were lucky & able to invite everyone w/ a guest & a lot of our 'and guest' didn't even bring one.

Just don't put and guest. And on the inner envelope just write 'Miss Jane Doe'

ETA: I think that's all you can do, and just hope for the best. We're going to do the same. We'd ike to invite everyone with a guest, but we can't afford to pay for people who are bringing guests for the hell of it. Only Spouses and LTR's

i like that idea - invitation and confirmation - think it would work

It's unfortunate that people have no etiquette. A friend of mine had to send out notes to all those that added guests on the RSVP card. Sometimes people assume that's it's ok to bring someone along. They should ask before assuming.

when you address both the outer and inner envelope, you only put the guests' name

Mr John Smith (no 'and guest')

that makes it quite clear that they are they only one invited....same goes for no dhildren...don't put the childrens' names on the envelopes and that should be obvious enough that children are not invited

Thank you for all the help

Re: how do I request no extra guest on invite

We omitted the section that asked for the number of people attending and left out 'and guest' on the inner envelope. Not sure if it is going to work, but it's worth a shot.
Good luck,

My outer envelopes said,

Miss Jane Smith
123 Your Street
Town, State 11111

My inner envelope said:

Jane

So far, everyone figured it out for themselves. Only one person called and asked if he could bring a date (Fi's uncle). Fi had a discussion with him about it (because Fi's aunt died a few years back and the uncle wanted to bring a date) But, in the end, we allowed him to do it.
