how do I stop fighting cats?

We have a 9 year old female who is the sweetest little thing. Now we have (temporarily) my sisters 1 year old male cat. We have had him for 3 weeks and don't know when he is going back to my sister. At first my cat just hissed at him now they are attacking each other!! They have been waking us up every night with their fighting!!! Neither of them have claws so they aren't really hurting each other but they are so loud! Any suggestions on how to get them to behave??

That is strange that a male/ female cat will fight each other. Usually 2 male cats will tend to fight.
It may take a lot of time getting used to. There is a big age difference between the cats. Plus your cat is being invaded by this new cat. Cats are very territorial.
My parents have an older cat, and then brought a kitten in. The kitten wanted to play and fight with the older one.
Well it took months of them getting used to one another. Now they are each other's pals. They will swap paws every now and then, but they look out for each other.
All I can say is give it time!!! Good Luck

I have two cats that absolutely love eachother- they sleep together, snuggle, clean eachother, it is so cute! This does not stop them from fighting, very loudly, on the bed in the middle of the night. Sorry-I know that didn't help!

Do you break them up when they are fighting?

It is not easy to break up fighting cats. At least they don't have claws!! Mine do, but I don't break them up- I know they won't hurt eachother. I just yell for them to stop and they usually take it into another room.

I have two cats who are brother and sister. They fight for about 15 seconds every other day. Mostly male cat corners her under the bed and she cry and hisses but they ocassionally fight. I was told YOU SHOULD NOT separate them or pull them apart. But instead throw something soft like a cat toy at them. This is just their way of working out issues. I also read this recently. They never do harm to one another just scare me a little. I also sometimes squart them with water.
