that the cat he's loved for so many years has passed away????
My father in law called from Puerto Rico to tell us that Stevie died in his sleep... My DH doesn't know yet because he is at work and won't be home till tomorrow morning...I am so scared to tell him...he's going to be heartbroken!!

Oh wow. I don't even know how I would ever do that. I would probably be a coward and tell him to call his dad because he has something important to tell him.
I'm sorry for your DH's loss of his childhood pet. I know how hard it is.

I'm sorry for your DH's loss of his childhood pet. I know how hard it is.
maybe I could do that...I am just so nervous...I am the reason he had to send Stevie to PR in the first place... I'm allergic to cats, and while in my 6th month of pregnancy, I suffered an asthma attack that required hospitalization...so the cat had to go... I feel somewhat responsible for DH not getting the chance to see him again...

I agree, This is not your fault. I would do anything for my pets, but when a choice has to be paid between a pet and your unborn child, the child wins.
Maybe it would be better to have his dad tell him, though. His father obviously didn't have trouble calling to tell you.

can't let his dad tell him....he has no tact whatsoever...he'll just say something like:
'uh, yeah...Stevie's dead'
As simple as saying it that way may sound, I would like to put it a bit more gently than that. Hopefully I won't choke...
