Is there a formula and do u need to decide before u go speak to a limo company or do they help u decide how many u will need.

It depends on how many ppl are in your bridal party...and who (other than BP) do u want to ride in a limo.
I have 8 couples, 1 JB + 1 JU, 2 flower girls...so, I got the BP two 12-14 passenger limos so that they will be comfortable.
Me and my fiance are having a rolls royce. I also ordered one limo for my parents and one for fiance's parents to get to the hall. (they are planning to put some family members in the limos with them).
We basically figured this out when we were at the limo place.

They'll help. They'll ask you where the guys are staying, where the girls are getting ready, how far you are from the church, how many people in the bridal party. Then they'll be able to tell you how many limos you need. I'm using one limo (stretch H2!) to pick up the guys, drop them off at the church (5 minutes away) then pick up the girls and drop them off at the church. After the church, guys and girls get in the Hummer and go to take pictures then reception. Dad and I will be in the Rolls, then after the ceremony, DH and I will take the Rolls to go take pictures. The Rolls will drop us off, then we'll get in the Hummer with the bridal party to go to the reception.

Make a list of your wedding party, your immediate family (including any silbings) and count the number of people. Will your groom ride with you in the same limo? Will his groomsmen be riding in the same limo as your groom. Count the number of people for his limo. Will MOG require her own limo if she and FOG decide not to drive?
We had 3 limos. One big limo for myself with my girls and immediate family, a small limo for my groom and his guys, a small limo for MOG with FOG and the parents of our Jr. GM. My parents pay for only 2 limos. MOG's limo was paid by MOG.

Just to add one more thing to what everyone else said. My limo guy also asked me how big/full my gown was b/c sometimes YOU take up more room than you think if you have a full gown. Usually, Bride & Groom are sitting in the 2-seater part of the limo anyway but I just thought that was a good question to ask.

definately make a list of all the people, they'll be able to help you out then...
were getting 1 14 passanger cause we decided to stay in the limo with the bridal party(well only be 8 or 9 total but well have room)

Also determine if you will need the car(s) for pictures, and if you will let one car go after photos. My DH & I let our Rolls go once we got to the Planting Fields and we rode back with our BP in their car(s)
