Re: how do you address envelope to married couple if woman kept her maiden name?

I asked my mom the same questions and she said...'that even though the woman is keeping her name it is still, Mr. & Mrs Joe Schmoe.' Mind you she isn't an English Professor!!! But that is how I'll be doing it.

But it makes sense even though that she kept her maiden name she's still Mrs. Joe Schmoe...I'd agree with that one.

Re: how do you address envelope to married couple if woman kept her maiden name?

We ended up googling it and got a number of different responses...

we're tentatively doing:

Mr. Joe Schmoe
and Mrs. Jane Doe

Re: how do you address envelope to married couple if woman kept her maiden name?

Unless the woman goes by her husband's last name socially, no, she is not 'Mrs. John Smith.'

The correct addressing is:

Ms. Jane Doe and Mr. John Smith

The woman's name is first. She is addressed by 'Ms.,' not 'Mrs.,' which is used for women who share a last name with their husbands. The 'and' signifies that the couple is married. The names should go on the same line, but if there isn't space, proceed to the next line and indent.

Re: how do you address envelope to married couple if woman kept her maiden name?

Here's a question, along those lines. What to do If a couple is NOT married, which name comes first? I searched etiquette websites and found conflicting information on how to do it:

1. Names should be alphabetical
2. Womans name should come first
3. Person closest to the couple should come first.

I did #3..its just seemed to make the most sense to me.

Depends. I assume you mean a boyfriend and girlfriend and you know both their names (not 'and guest')?

Does the couple live together? If so, the woman and the man's name should be on separate lines with the woman's name first, regardless of who you know best.

Outer:

Ms. Jane Doe
Mr. John Smith

Inner:

Ms. Jane Doe
Mr. John Smith

If they do not live together, mail an invitation to the person you know better. Put that person's name on the outer envelope and both on the inner.

If you know the man better:

Outer: Mr. John Smith

Inner: Same as above.

ETA--correction.

That's not true. When I marry FH I will not be Mrs. FHlastname. Ever.

Had to add my two cents here...as a married lady who kept her maiden name i am TIRED of being addressed as Mrs. Husband's Name!! That is NOT my name.. (I know it sounds b!tchy but that is how i feel...i did not take his name so please don't call me that)

I had a friend who was so happy that I addressed her invites to her & her husband as...

Ms. Nancy Smith and Mr. Joseph Jones

I don't know what the 'etiquette' is but i can tell you we appreciate it more when our correct name is used...no matter what the darn etiquette people say! hahah.

i wish they would come up with a new term to put before our names that means 'married but kept maiden name'.
For example Mms. Kathryn Smith...(married ms.)

The ettiquette sites I saw said to do:

Mrs. Lady Maidenname and Mr. Man Hisname

You prefer Ms. to Mrs.? I always thought Ms. signified older unmarried lady or divorced lady.... even though it's 'supposed to be' neutral

I don't mind Mrs at all...as long as it's Mrs. Kathryn Maidenname...haha...i know Ms. makes me feel like an old maid...haha

Here's the etiquette i found while doing my own invites....note that a divorced woman who still uses her married name is still referred to as Mrs! weird...

Miss is used for an unmarried woman.

Mrs., with her husband's full name (if known), is used for a married woman or a widow; if a divorcée retains her married name, use Mrs. plus her own name, not her husband's.

Ms. is used in any of the above cases if the woman prefers it; it's also used if you do not know the woman's marital status or if you're addressing a divorcée who has resumed her maiden name.

Re: how do you address envelope to married couple if woman kept her maiden name?

Ditto all of the above that if a woman retains her last name, her social title is Ms., not Mrs.

Plus, 99% of the time if a woman has her own professional title or a separate last name, her name goes before her husband's. The exception would be if he has a professional title that outranks hers.
