I have spoken with some of you about this but I wanted to throw a question out there... About 4 months ago, we foolishly and quickly booked a photographer.... We signed a contract and handed him a deposit.... Since then, I have thought better of it. There are better photographers out there, no one has ever heard of him, we can't keep the negatives.... I found another photographer we want to go with..... Here's the thing:
1. How do you breaka contract? 2. Besides the deposit I had given him, am I liable for anything else? My wedding is pretty far off- in September- so he should be fine for the day- to find someone new to photograph.... fi thinks I owe him the whole contract!!!! That can't be true? Can it?

Before you do anything, does is state in the contract what the cancellation terms are? Considering that your wedding is 9 months away, you shouldn't be liable for anything except the deposit which you will probably lose. In terms of contracts, it's usually only the catering facilties that would hold you liable for additional compensation even though it's far in the future.
If you do wish to proceed, simply tell your photographer that you've had a change of heart and do not wish to proceed with hiring his/her services.
If there are no cancellation terms in the contract you may even get lucky and get your deposit back. BTW, I am sending you forum mail.

Aside from what Chefe said about the contract terms, etc. I would suggest sending the letter certifed mail/return receipt and ask the vendor to counter sign the cancellation request so that you have proof of the cancellatioon.

I would call them and find out, usually if anything you will lose your deposit. Since your wedding is so far off they should have no problem with you cancelling. Most vendors just want to be able to fill that space and if they didn't have enough time they would view it like you made them lose out on booking somebody else, in which case they would want you to pay the full amount. I don't think you should have a problem. Keep us posted

When I booked my vendors, I asked all of them what their cancellation policy was and all said that we would only lose the deposit. If your contract doesn't state otherwise, i think the only thing you will lose is the deposit.

Re: How do you break a contract? Please Help!
I broke 1 contract with my original florist and they gave me a credit so every time I need flowers I would call them and they deduct it off my credit. I will be breaking my contract with my photographer as I found another one who is much more professional. I will be sending them a letter and doing return receipt so I know they receive it. I'm sure they will call and try to keep me as a customer but I stated that I expect my deposit back as they did not specify on the contract that it was not refundable.
I'm sure after I tell them I am a member of LIweddings and I'll tell everyone how awful they are that they'll lose business I'll have a refund check in the mail. Get a little tough with them girl!!!!

I broke my contact with the first catering hall I chose. It was not a problem at all, thank God ( I waa very stressed over it)! I was only held responsible for the $500 deposit I gave them. I may still get that back if they re-book the room. My date was for August 17, 2003 and I cancelled the contract in Sept 2002, so it was almost a year before.
