How do you change your taxes when you get married?

How do you change your taxes when you get married?

Right now I claim 'single' and zero dependants.

My FH claims his son....so he claims 'single' and 2. I guess he is claiming himself and his son.

When we get married....do I simply claim 'married' and zero...or do I increase my dependents to 1 as well.

Same for him ....married and 3?

HELP. TIA

I just changed myself to Married with no deductions. My husband changed to Married with 1 deduction

I currently claim single 0 - b/c I want them to take as much out in taxes as possible now, rather than owing at the end of the year.

Once we get married, I plan on still claiming single 0 but filing jointly. Yes, you can do this.

Once you change your status to married, and claim more dependents (besides yourself) they will take out less per paycheck, and you might end up owing. However, claiming married w/a child will entitle you to more exemptions and claims, that if you do owe, you'll get more of a break.

I know we are both defintely changing our status to married. I just wasn't sure if we were both supposed to claim an additional dependent or not. I guess the # we claim will determine how much is withheld.

Does anyone know if the # of dependents isn't changed....and we simply change single to married...does that affect what we pay? I'm so confused.....sorry.

TIA

If you have an accountant, you should ask him/her. What you should do depends on your personal situation.

This is what our accountant suggested. That even after we get married, still claim single 0, but then file jointly at the end of the year.

That's exactly what we're doing. We just met with our accountant this weekend and she advised us that we should continue claiming single 0 and file jointly.

This is what we'll probably do as well. FH has a daughter and this year he claimed her, usually her mother claims her. Next year FH may claim her again, but I won't claim her on my taxes. Only he can claim her as a dependant. I think that's what you're asking.

One has nothing to do to the other.

I have been claiming married with 2 for the past 10 years on my paycheck and claiming single with no dependents on my tax return. I like less taxes taken out each paycheck. Some people like to get a bigger refund at the end of the year instead of bigger paycheck. Not me. I want it through out the year.

When you get married your tax return status changes and you must claim married. You can file jointly or separate. As far as the dependents, they have to be your actual dependents (they must have a SSN-not necessarily your children or spouse) where on the paycheck you can claim 10 if you want.

Hope this helps.

we are both keeping ours at single/0 and then get a bigger refund at the end of the year, it will probably change once we have kids though
