how do you deal with a spouse or s/o who doesn't pick up after themselves???

Original post by cocoa

my dh can clean up after himself, but doesn't. i know he CAN do it, but everyday, i come home and his shoes are in the middle of the kitchen, his clothing is draped on a kitchen chair, his half eaten bagel is sitting there next to the computer, the bed is not made, the bathroom looks like we have 10 kids...usually i just straighten up, but damn, i don't feel like it sometimes. what do i do? i'm ready to take a mini vacation just for myself so that he can deal with all his $h!t by himself, but that sounds so heartless. any tips???

throw it out-THEY LEARN after a while

if my stuff ever got thrown out, she'd be in the grabage looking for it

He does straighten up his stuff but sometimes he can be kind of slow, meaning he won't necessarily jump to do it right away but he does it.

Darren and I fought about this ONCE, then I got fed up and threw his stuff in the pool That led to a big fight...so the next time I just threw it on the back lawn.
I don't really have to pick up after him anymore.

I finally decided not to do his laundry since he has not done ONE LOAD since November...I figured when he ran out of boxers, he would have to, right? HE STARTED WEARING THEM INSIDE OUT!!!!!!!! One day I really felt so fed up I started crying and saying I would not be that nagging wife. It helped. For a week. I have to remind him to flush the toilet! Apparently in his parents' house they did not flush the toilet!

omg, that is too funny!!! he gets mad at me b/c i don't flush after every pee and not b/c i forget but b/c i grew up being told that flushing uses a lot of water and is wasteful, so that is making me laugh. and oh...my dh WOULD WEAR HIS STUFF INSIDE TOO!!!

That's true, his parents have a beach house on an island and there is no electricity so there is a sign saying, 'In this land of sun and fun we never flush for number one.'

It is so funny this was posted because on my way home from work FH calls me and tells me he is straightening up around the apartment. Well I just walked in and I'm not quite sure what he was straightening up. His stuff is all over like it always is.

My DH and I have been married forever, and I still don't know how to get him to pick up after himself! Nothing but nothing works! My nemesis is papers. He drags papers and newspapers home and leaves them everywhere. Tears articles out of the newpaper, and magazines. It's miserable. I have just given up. It isn't worth fighting over. He says if you need to clean it up, clean it up!

One time I wanted to teach him a lesson about turning clothes right side out to go in the laundry. So when they came out of the dryer inside out I just folded them that way and put them in his closet inside out. He took everyone that was inside out and threw them back into the dirty clothes until he found one right side out. So who learned the lesson? I swear he graduated from the Neanderthal school of Charm and Grace!

But all in all the other qualities outweigh his sloppiness, so I just pick up and keep going. It's not worth the fight!
