I think a thread evolves and that's cool but when someone (or I guess it would require more than one person to make it more truly hijacked) just turns it around to something totally different then I think it's wrong. Start a new thread or FM that person I guess.
Also depeds on the subject - silly subjects tend to evolve into even more silliness quickly but a more serious topic should be treated (not the right word but I can't think of another) with a little respect for that person that started the thread.
