Personally, I don't think you can find the perfect dress without going and trying on a bunch to see what works for you and what doesn't. Since you know you want fur, I'd suggest going to high end stores (Kleinfelds, Saks etc.). Find a style you like and maybe discuss w/ a seamstress what changes you might want made--is this making any sense?

What I'm trying to say is just because a dress is made one way doesn't mean that part of it can't be changed to suit you - my friend had a gown w/ spaghetti straps made into a 3/4 sleeve, off the shoulder gown.

I started out by deciding what dress looked best with my shape: Busty and thick waisted. After that I just continued to look at wedding books, websites, etc for those dresses which complimented by figure.

I would suggest relaxing and try not to get overwhelmed. There are so many choices and it can make you crazy.

My opinion -- just keep on going to stores and trying dresses on. Reading books/magazines doesn't help. Pay attention to what parts you like of particular dresses, even if you don't like the entire gown. (Such as -- I love the neckline, but the skirt is too plain, yadda yadda) That way, after trying on 100 dresses and going to 10 places, if you still haven't found something you love you can have one made from all pieces you remember liking...

ALOT OF LOOKING!!! I know you have the idea in your head what you want!! And though it is hard..... try some others that might not be what you 'think' you would like. The dress I chose I saw it & said that is gorgeous but there is No WAY I'm wearing strapless! Sure enough I'm wearing strapless!

It's just one of those things. I would say be open to things that you didn't originally picture for yourself. My dress was one that I would have never chosen for myself and quite honestly, looked horrendous on the hanger You'll just know when you put it on and start doing the happy-dance around the store.

Good Luck!!!!!

Re: How do you find the?

I knew the look I was going for, Princessy but not poofy, more like an slimline Princess
I also knew I wanted chiffon so it could flow like Juliet
So I went shopping, looking for anything that fit my 'look' and when I put on the dress, I felt sooo beautiful like a Queen.

So......narrow it down and then GO SHOPPING !!!!!!!!!!!!! When you try it on, you will fall in love instantly and know that is THE dress

Theresa... I can honestly tell you that the dress I bought is NOT a dress I thought I'd like just by looking at it in a mag. Why don't you go out there and try some things on? You'd be surprised what you end up with!!! Don't worry! You're perfect dress is out there somewhere for ya!

Good luck!

ALSO.... a good seamstress can do WONDERS! If you find a dress you LOVE, but doesn't have fur on it!!! You can always add it!!! Plus then it becomes a one of a kind too!

What about going to a dress maker and having one made for you? They are not as expensive as you would think....and you can pretty much design your own....
You can bring some pic's that you like and maybe combine aspects of a few dresses and have your 'perfect dress' custom made....

I know a good one, if you want, I would be more than happy to pass along the info.

Teresa

I found my dress in 3 visits - but I had a good idea of what I wanted. Can you identify features you want? maybe a good seamstress will help

Try Lillettes in Baldwin. I know its probably out of your way, but they are fabulous there.

Good luck

Re: How do you find the?

I have to tell you that I thought the perfect dress did not exist. I must have tried on at least 50 dresses and I thought everyone thought I was just crazy (I am not usually picky about clothes either). I was about to settle on one I thought was the best of the bunch. On my way to try that dress on for like the 5th time, my mom convinced me to go to Bridal Couture (which many people here complain about - but my mom's friend loved). I went and saw this beautiful dress and I said that would never look right on me (I had tried similar styles and the looked bad on me) ...well the salesperson and my mom said just try it. I did and feel in love with it. Didn't care about anything price, bargaining anything. My mom and aunt were crying - I knew I had the one.

Just search the best you can and try all different things - keep your mind open and hopefully you will have the experience I had!!!

Good Luck!

Re: How do you find the?

Thanks everyone for your input..

I have a hard time buying panties because I am so picky and I usually want them to match the outter clothing. I am so weird...

For the prom Yes Prom I tried on over 300 dresses. I am so werid..

I have no idea what I want. .I just want to be very dramatic and make a statement..
and I hate not knowing.. It make me so sad!

Don't worry about not knowing what you want. Just try everything on until you find it. (I tried on over 100 wedding gowns if that makes you feel any better!)

Re: How do you find the?

I agree with the advice just keep trying on dresses and try on all styles. When I went to the bridal salon the woman there told me that there are only about 7 different styles of gowns.Thereafter everything is a modification of those styles. If you can start ruling out styles that you don't like at all(after you try them on not from a magazine of looking at the hanger)that might be a better starting point for you.

Theresa I ended up with a gown I would've never thought I would wear--my mother actually picked it out with the bridal salon owner. Mom described to the lady what she wanted a dress to look like on me---material, neckline, skirt-line and the woman located a gown in the salon.

Hang in there you'll find your dress.

Re: How do you find the?

Theresa I really think you should look into having this dress made.

When we last spoke on this you knew that you wanted something form fitting , so that is a start.

I think the fur part may be a little tricky that is why I suggest having it professionally made.

Re: How do you find the?

The dress that I love is by far NOT what I thought it would have. It has pearls on it! YES pearls! I am not a fan of pearls and my mother said the same thing. But it is beautiful...
But when I put the gown on, I couldn't speak. I just smiled and kept touching it all over the place. After a while all I said was wow, wow. Although I feel this is 'the' dress, I am still going to shop around this weekend. Have two appts. I second guess everything.

Re: How do you find the?

I was totally convinced I wanted strapless...and every strapless I tried on made me look like sausage busting out of its casing. Ugh. I looked like I weighed 30 lbs heavier. Needless to say I did not end up with strapless...I went with a halter A-line, which emphasized my boobs and de-emphasized my a$$.

What I'm trying to say is looking in magazine is fine - it helped me get a handle on who the various designers were and whether I liked their style - but I don't think you truly know until you try on tons of them.

Re: How do you find the?

Well I found my dress at the third store. I swear I must have tried on 50-75 dresses at three stores. Don't make up your mind right away! There are so many out there. The first one I tried on I thought was the one. But then I went to two more stores and found more beautiful dresses at each store. I ripped pics out of magazines that I liked. I brought them with me and finally the last store had one of the dresses. The pic was a maggie sottero with lots of beading which I don't like too much bead work, but the dress she had looked exactly the same and all the bead work was embrodery and it was a Symphony dress. My sister and I fell in love with it. It fits my personality so well. It has purple flowers. I love Purple and I love flowers!!! So fitting. Just be patient and take your time looking! It is fun. You feel like a model. And it is never to early to go shopping. My wedding is over a year away!

Good Luck! Have fun!
