How do you go dress shopping??

How do you go dress shopping??

I know I sound like a moron right now, but i've only been dress shopping once and it wasn't very effective because the lady just asked me what was I looking for and I told her I was pretty flexible but I don't want anything strapless and she just gave me these 3 dresses to try on that were too big for me and I didn't really like..so in my head im like, what was the point of this?? Was I supposed to search for dresses online and then bring in the number of the particular dresses I wanted to try on? I'm confused Is there a particular way you're supposed to go about dress shopping?

well they asked me the same thing, what i was looking for...So i basically told her what desigers i was interested in seeing, and what style dress i wanted...they bought out dresses by those designers in the style i wanted.

to be 100% honest i feel unless you know the exact dress you are looking for you should definitely try a place that has dresses out on the floor

in my very limited experience i have found that the 'higher end' places tend to give you a hard time if you dont know the dress you want. I went to a few places and said 'i want NON strapless dresses under $3K' and one place told me FLAT OUT that they dont have any so my mom and sister had to steal them from other girls when they were done - and there were PLENTY. If i mentioned a style number then all of a sudden they had it - this happened in a few places. and then OTHER places would bring me ONLY strapless dresses way over my budget. I think sometimes they want you to MAKE your dress which is great for some girls - but i like to see something before i buy it and i didnt want to do that

I had the best experiences at Lillette's and FLowerama - I bought my dress at Flowerama bc it is 10 minutes from my house. At these places, I told them what I was looking for and they picked out dresses they thought i would like - i think i tried on 15 dresses at Lillette's! PLUS we looked through the racks and searched for dresses ourselves.

So in my experience, the less 'fancy' places might be a better place to start. For me, I thought it was nice that you had a whole room to try the dresses on and pretty couches and all that - but what is the good in that if you cant find a dress! LOL Good Luck!

ETA: the dresses are always going to be huge but those women can work magic with those clips! LOL

Re: How do you go dress shopping??

I am going dress shopping next week and I had made my appointments a month ago to go meet with these people. I have a concept of what i kinda want but i don't want to limit what they give to me with the exception of dresses way out of my buget range. I told them i hate the pick up look, do not want a big poofy princess gown and nothing with a huge train. I wouldn't say give me only sleeves - i would say i want to see something with a sleeve or a strapless that straps can be put on or cap sleeves.

They all said no problem. I then had to ask if they would have anything in my size range. I so far have to ask this because most shops don't carry larger sizes with the exception of david's bridal. I am a size 14 and they all told me if they don't have a sample in my size they just clip the back to my bra so i can get an picture of what it would look like. I honestly haven't heard too many stories that the samples are too big for girls then i guess it would be wishful thinking on my behalf to have that problem IoI

SO i guess have a concept of what you hate - mention about having a dress that can be altered so its not strapless or maybe have a jacket on top of it a cute little shrug and ask about what sizes they carry.

I hope that helps.

I am reading these posts and feeling better because I see people requested dresses with a sleeve of some sort and actually had things to look at! I've been in a few stores bridesmaid dress shopping and I only see strapless dresses. I was really hoping for somethng else.

i've had good and bad experiences with dress shopping and i've only been to three or four places. the first one i went to, the sales lady was very helpful and i told her what style of dress i was most interested in (strapless, non-ball gown or A-line), and they worked with that. then they pulled out dresses they thought i would look good in for my body type. i haven't found the perfect dress yet, but sometimes you need to think outside of the box. a good salesperson will be able to give you suggestions when you're stuck and frustrated.

yeah pretty much what i did was bring in some snips of what i wanted from some magazines then she brought me out those exact dresses and then if she couldnt find the exact she would bring me things very similar i also told her which designers i was interested in and then told her anything but strapless. you shoulkd go to the bridal suite in centereach and ask for barbara she was absolutly wonderful. you can totally tell she lives for this ****!

I'm learning too so this really helps me out.. I did go and find some pics of dresses I was looking to try on so good to know this is going to help.

Look online for dresses that you might like to try on. When you try on a dress, take mental notes on what you like or dislike about it. Tell the saleswoman what you're thinking, and she'll be able to show you dresses that are more to your taste.

GOOD LUCK!!

I just tried to go in open minded and tried on lots of different style dresses. Once i got an idea of what looked better on me I narrowed it down to that style and tried on more dresses like that.
