I bought the stew meat, but have absolutely no idea what to do besides cut up carrots and potatoes... just boil them all together? Anything else to make the gravy??

Re: How do you make beef stew?
I also add onions, celery and broth/stock (chicken or beef). I usually make it in the crock pot. I brown the beef first then put it in the crock pot. Next I add the diced veggies and the liquid. You can add some cornstarch or flour if you like it really thick, but the potatoes should help thicken it. Of course don't forget to season to you liking.

Re: How do you make beef stew?
I usually marinate the meat first in a liquid meat tenderizer and seasonings and sazon and garlic over night first. I put the whole bowl of meat including the marinate (not a vinegar based one) in the pot when I cook it. I usually use a good canned beef gravy to make it thick mixed with the juice from the marinade. I cook it all day and put the potatoes & veggies in last. The meat will be super tender.

lightly flour the meat, and then brown it....pour off the excess oil, or transfer pots....add a few heaping dashes of worshershire sauce (sp???) and 1 cup of water. then add salt and pepper and 1 bay leaf. then add carrots and potatoes. bring to a boil, and then down to a simmer, covered for 1 hour...then add peas, and 5 minutes later, its ready!!!! Yummy!!!!!

Flour the beef, brown in oil. Add about two cups of water and some gravy master. Add sliced onions and potatoes. simmer for about an hour, skimming top occasionally. I had carrots and cook for another 45 minutes or so. I also add a can of corn towards the end.
Also, you can float some uncooked bisquits (like Pilsbury from the can) and simmer them with the stew for the last 45 minutes - dumplings!!! Yum!!!!

Re: How do you make beef stew?
I just had the best luck with beef stew the other night...
first: cut up some bacon (raw) and fry it up. take it out and set aside. brown the meat in the bacon fat. add onions, flour and spices.
When its all brown and nice, add wine and broth. Then bring it to a boil, and then put it in the oven for two hours at 325.
About a half hour before the two hours are up, saute in a seperate pan and then toss the rest of the vegetables into the pan in the oven.
I made mine kind of a beef burginon and it came out surprisingly good.
Good Luck! Enjoy!

Re: How do you make beef stew?
My great-grandmother always believed in the simpliest recipes tasting the best.
I heat some vegetable oil in a large pot on the stove (over medium high). I add salt and pepper to some flour in a shallow bowl, and flour the meat really well. When the oil is hot, I add the meat to the pot and brown well on all sides. Then I add about a 1/2 cup of red wine to deglaze the pot slightly. I then add a medium onion, sliced.
After the onion has had a chance to carmelize well, I add large chuncks of carrots and potatoes and also some fresh green beans. I add enough water to the pot to just cover all the ingredients. Bring to a boil and add 1 small can of tomato sauce and a few dashes of gravy master (for color), then reduce heat to low and simmer for an hour.
After an hour, the cooked potatoes will have already thickened the 'gravy' a bit, as has the flour from the meat. If it's still too 'thin', you can use 1/4 cold water, mixed with 2 tablespoons of Gravymaster and slowly add to the pot, stirring until you reach desired thickness. Salt/Pepper to taste. Enjoy!

Re: How do you make beef stew?
Okay this is a spanish style beef stew. Marinate the beef stew cubes w/seasoning, such as sazon, pepper, adobo some garlic You can let that sit for awhile.
Brown the beef in a pot, open up a small can of Goya tomatoe sauce and add that to the pot, then add water to just cover the beef, let that cook in the pot, covered, over medium heat for about an hour and half (this will get the beef tender). I also like to add in extra garlic (whole pieces or half)
You have to check it during this time and keep adding a little water so that the beef is just covered, the water evaporates as it's cooking and if you don't add more water the beef will burn.
After the hour and a half you add your potatoe chunks. let that cook for about 10 minutes, then add sliced (think about half inch wide) onion, green pepper, and goya pitted green olives (called salad olives on jar). You can also add some sprigs of cilantro, but I don't really care for cilantro that much)
You should also check the liquid at this point to make sure it's thickened (from the potatoes and beef) the liquid should not cover everything in the pot, it's okay that some of the onions and peppers are sticking out because you should stirr the contents in the pot so everything gets soft. If the liquid is too thick then add a little more water. you should let that cook for about another 15-20 minutes until the potatoes are softer stick a fork in them.
Serve over white Rice.

You can put almost anything into a beef stew. Sometimes I also slice up some Chorizo sausage.

Re: How do you make beef stew?
I brown the meat, add garlic, salt, pepper, paprika, add 2 small cans of tomatoe sauce, chopped onion, and some water to cover the meat, put in pressure cooker for 18 minutes, let out steam, open up , add potaotes and chuncked up peeled carrots, pressure cook another 8 minutes. let out steam, taste for flavors, add more seasonings if necessary, then add frozen mixed veggies and pressure cook 3 minutes, let out steam and open and serve. YUMMY!
