How do you negotiate vendor pricing....

How do you negotiate vendor pricing....

without sounding like a jerk the way my FH does! We got into a fight last night bec he said its all negotiable with the vendors as far as price. I said thats fine but they are in control of our wedding, SO please dont be a jerk to them. He will say something like 'Come on....that much really, the place over there will give us that for this much' and then I begin to blush with embarassment because I feel like he is being condescending and rude. He says there are business people trying to make $ so they know who to wheel and deal! OYYYYY VEEEYYY!

I am sorry to say but I have acted like your FH and that is the reason why I am under budget!!!!!!! I gave my DJ the quote that another DJ gave us and he matched it, that right there saved us $300. For the trolley our DJ knew the people over at cruise control so he bargained for us and got us a sick deal for pick up drop off. the venue, we did a lot of bargaining, but overall it was the day and time that saved us the most $$$$$$$$. Never accept the first offer!!!!

i just ask ....

'that's a little out of my price range ... is there any way you could lower your price?'

and if they can't, then you can say 'oh, well, i really wish we could have worked with you but unfortunately a different vendor gave me a price that was lower and we're going to have to go with them'

if they still don't budge, then they never will.

oh, and just so you know, just because you say these things doesn't mean you can't still book the 'expensive' vendor.

HTH - good luck!

yup ita Ren!

I let Steve do the negotiating tho I usually say something dumb.
So now he does the talking and I smile and nod until they agree on a price!

ITA! asking for a better price is def something good to do, BUT everything depends of the word selection and tone of voice, u can get a lot more by how persuasive u are

My FH is exactly the same for all our vendors i felt like we were in an eBay auction through emails.... we actually had a photographer write a nasty email to us because we were 'taking too long' to decide and he felt that we were shopping his price around... i was very embarrassed but FH got me everything we wanted and for the price we wanted

I think he is saying the right things (we can get this for cheaper elsewhere), but maybe not in the right tone.

I am a BIG believer in 'you catch more flies with honey.'

I think it's important to have a strict amount that you want to spend and make it a lot lower than what their asking. Tel them your budget and see what they can do, if they're not flexible or accommodating then maybe they're not the right vendor for you. We've negotiated everything so far!

We give faces to each other and make sure the vendor sees it...lol... then say 'Well, we were looking to spend *this much* is there anything we can take out of the package?'

we've worked with really great people so far who have given us amazing prices, sometimes it's WHO you know too =)

Re: How do you negotiate vendor pricing....

ias someone who has worked in the wedding industry and customer service its def ok to ask once but just because its not a tangible object people think things are always negotiable. sometimes they are not. I am not one to sit there forever and rip the company apart waiting for a discount. its not really worth the time and aggrevation to me. i always find the people who I deal with who ask me for a discount just for the heck of it obnoxious. I have had people sit in my office and say ' so i dont want to pay that you have to do better for me, but I want this this this and that'

*point of story, try asking for add ons thrown in rather than reducing price if they dont budge on the first try*

You always get a lot more with sugar than with vinegar and you dont want to set a bad tone for the rest of your wedding, and be that bride that no one wants to talk to

Hahah, right the last thing you want to do is piss them off!

I actually handled most of the negotiation and just approached it with a firm hand, but a nice tone (ie, NOT condescending!). There was a lot of 'can you do a little better than that? What if we pay cash? etc'.

I negotiated everything but the DJ, as the price seemed way beyond reasonable.

I lied and said other vendors offered me this. some times it was true. Vendors are always willing to negotiate with you
