How do you pick out a steak?

How do you pick out a steak?

I know that this sounds like a silly question, but I have been a vegetarian for 14 yrs. I want to make my DH dinner tonight since we could not celebrate our 5yr. dating anniversary last night. I subject the poor man to a vegetarian lifestyle at home 99% of the time and thought it might be nice to actually prepare something for him other then veggies. I have my gloves ready(the thought of handling meat ), but I have no idea what I am looking for at the store. I am going to go to wholefoods what cut should I get? I don't know a porterhouse from a skirt.

I would get a Porter House steak, about 1-1/2 inches thick. Ask someone for help.

I would get a filet mignon or sometimes referred to as tenderloin at the store. It's a great cut and no fat. Good luck. I agree with the above person, ask the butcher for help!

I think Rib Eyes have wonderful flavor & nice tenderness.
Look for good marblization (sp?) too. (Not too much fat, not too little, there should be a nice lacing of the white stuff throughout the steak)
Sorry to gross you out.

Porterhouse is great because it has both filet and sirloin. Get one that's at least a pound and grill it if you can. Otherwise you can pan sear it, then broil it. Use butter, pepper and garlic!

You are a very sweet person to make this for him...

Thank you all for the advice. I got a grainfed porterhouse(something about cooking filet scared me). It is nicely marbled and about 1 1/2- 2 inches thick. Steak is expensive. I had no idea.
