I was told by my reception hall that bartendars don't need to be tipped because the 18% service charge covers it.
But how do you tell your guests they don't have to slide that $1 bill to the bartendar? Seems alot of guests don't realize this so they will tip... and seeing one guest tip will make the others feel obligated too or feel cheap if they don't.
My FH said he would tip anyway 'cus it's just habit for him even though he knows about hte 18% service charge. I disagree.
Any thoughts?

Re: How Do You Tell Guests They Don't Have To Tip?
I went to a wedding where the bar had a framed sign that said, 'gratutities have already been provided by your hosts.'

That sounds odd because usually the service charge goes to employees as their wage, not as a tip.
I have been working at a catering hall to get extra money for the wedding and I appreciate when people tip above the service charge (which they seem to if it's a small party but, when you work like none other, they don't seem to bother).
If a guest feels that they need to tip the bartender, I'd let them. Most people who do it, do it if they have gotten great service or in anticipation of getting great service.

You shouldn't have to inform your guests. Like the above poster said, some sites put a sign, but others just don't put out a 'tip jar' and it's understood. Sometimes a guest feels their server/bartender went the extra length for them, and want to tip by slipping a few bucks in their hand. At that point the server/bartender makes the decision on accepting it or not.

some people are just tippers because they want the bartenders/waiters to give them exceptional service everytime they see the approaching... that's my brother's reasoning anyway

i went to a wedding where the parking and tips had already been paid for so when you walked in there was a framed sign that said something like: 'Gratuities have been paid for' the wording was nicer i cant remember right now
