How do you tell someone you didn't chose them to be a bridesmaid?
One of my friends has expressed that she would really love to be one of my bridesmaids. However, I have other people that I feel closer to at this point in my life that I would prefer to ask. Has anyone had to deal with a similar situation? I am still considering her because I know it would really hurt her if I didn't chose her. But if I decide not to, I'm not quite sure how to tell her. Any suggestions?

This is coming from someone who hoped to be in someones bridal party (but wasn't asked).... me
I was in a similar situation.. only I was the one who was left wondering WHY I wasn't asked. You have to tell her EXACTLY how you feel. She will understand once everything is out in the open. I was hurt when I found out I wansn't going to be asked, but I got over it eventually and just accepted it. No hard feelings at all.

just tell her that you are only having close friends and family. that if you were having a larger party it would be different but you are keeping it to a minimum, however you'd love her to go to the bachelorette party and join in the festivities.

why not make her a reader or a helper in some sorts, this way she doesn't feel left out.

I agree! Just tell her how you feel. As the wedding comes closer I'm sure there will be plenty of things she can be involved in!

I agree. Don't add her b/c you feel obligated.. I did that and it was a disaster!!! I do think you owe it to her to explain to her why you aren't going to have her as a bridesmaid and ask her to do something else important that day ( like a reading)
I have been on both ends of it and expected to be asked and never was and it was a very uncomfortable awkward situation that we never talked about and it left a bad taste in my mouth.

I know what you are going through. The day I called one of my close friends from college to tell her I got engaged, she started saying something or other like well just don't pick ugly dresses--i sorta nipped it in the bud b/c i didn't want her to expect to be in the BP.. anyway I just told her i'd love to have you but i already have 5 girls (my sis, my sil and my 2 FSILs..) all family. I felt bad, but i think she understood. Just explain how you feel to her and be honest.

I have three friends whom I consider equally close to me, so I decided not to include any of them in my bridal party (which already has 5 people: my two sisters, his little sister, and my best friend from home and from college). I just explained to all of them that 8 was simply too many bridesmaids for me, but that of course they were VERY special to me. Many friends understand that there are 'levels' of friendship, and you can have many close friends who are not necessarily best friends, but whom you love dearly. The reader suggestion was a great one.

I had the same problem, I had 2 women (one my friend, the other FH's friend) who thought they were going to be in the bridal party. I simply informed them that the choices had already been made, and we were limiting it to family and our closest friends since we had enough people already, but we will be happy to have them as guests. Plus I told them, you don't have to worry about spending $300 on dress, shoes, purse, etc. that you'll never wear again!!

Wow, I'm kinda in the same situation. I was best friends with a girl for like 2 or 3 years during the end of high school/ beginning of college, but a lot has happened since then. She still introduces me to people as her 'best friend', but I haven't felt the same way in quite a while. The hard thing is that she THINKS she is in the wedding-- she has told me 'I can't wait till we go shopping for bridesmaid dresses!'. Ouch. Her mother-in-law is throwing her an engagement party this Saturday in CT, and she is actually coming home early just to come to my birthday get-together! I feel terrible, butt I have to do what's best for me. She is a great girl, but so much has happened that has made me lose a lot of respect for her. I am just going to tell her that I am having a VERY small party, and explain to her that I still love her. She will definitely be hurt, b/c she is just that way... but I know in my heart that if I did include her, it would only be out of pity... and that is just wrong.
