Hi I'm going to look at some LI halls this weekend and I want to know how I can negotiate on the price. How do I approach it? Also Is there any way for me to change my user name? I accidently types Mileysgirl instead of Mikeysgirl. It looks kinda funny. Thanks Ladies!

Re: How does one Negotiate ?
how to negotiate....i have one word for you: CASH!!!
halls LOVE cash...and lots of it. if you can bring them great big deposits in cash you have the ability negotiate easier. you can save sometimes on tax, or get them to upgrade things.
if you start with an 'updated' item (like a premier menu or something similiar), with a higher guarantee (like guaranteeing 150 instead 125 guests), that also gives you room to negotiate price, extras, add-ins, etc.
as for the changing name--just have to create a new one to do that

Re: How does one Negotiate ?
We did all deposits in cash, including our hall. Once they hear that, the prices automatically change!!

Re: How does one Negotiate ?
we just said... can you do better than that? and they came down a bit on the price. we also told them we were uncomfortable with their minimum count and they lowered that too.

Re: How does one Negotiate ?
I was soo nervous about this too! Once I found the hall I wanted this is how I approached it - I started with the menu I wanted and tried to see if I could replace, substitute, or take out some items and see how much they would take off of the price pp. If that didn't work, I would go to their lowest menu and try to add on things that I wanted and see what the cost woudl be pp. After this, they seemed to get the fact that I needed to work with the price so they started throwing things in or making suggestions as so how they could get the price down for me. Some flat out asked what my budget was. If the hall wasn't interested in helping me out, then I wasn't interested in dealing with them and I left. The way I see it is, if this is my 'Dream' place and they can't accomodate my budget, then how difficult are they going to be during this entire process - you want them to work with you from the beginning and up until the day of your wedding. I also noticed that they didn't budge as much during the initial visit but they were more willing to work with me when I made the follow-up phone call with these questions or scheduled a second visit. GOOD LUCK!

Re: How does one Negotiate ?
When I went hall shopping, I carried a list of what each place was giving me, and how much it was pp. Basically, I pitted the halls against each other.
First, I said, 'I don't want to spend more than $X/pp.' After they knew that was my ideal price, they started seeing what they could give me that would work. THEN, I started pitting the halls against each other. When at Fox Hollow, I said something like 'I really love this hall, but what [some other hall] is giving us for the price is really a lot more, and would make us the happiest.'
Doing that, I got the pp price down, AND an extra entree choice (8 now!), an extra dish at the CH, ice sculptures, mini-vienesse, fondue at every table (I don't want the chocolate ftn), wine on all tables at dinner, a lower minimum, and a few other things too.
Go see a few halls. Make sure you keep track of what they'll give you for the price, then go BACK to your favorite hall, and begin the negotiating.
Good luck, and have fun!
eta: Cash meant nothing to my hall. It is ILLEGAL for them to waive the tax, even if you pay cash.

Re: How does one Negotiate ?
cash def helps - and def a second meeting helps too - bc then it shows that you thought abt it and are interested - and just need a good price. Sometimes it doesnt hurt to ask for a lower price...
Good Luck!!

Re: How does one Negotiate ?
Just a warning...your wedding date. That was the date that I origianlly wanted as well. Most of the halls i visited had that date booked already....07/07/07. Other halls such as Jericho Terrace and Watermill were charging more for that date. I decided that it was worth it to change the date and save some money
Just be willing to walk away if you aren't happy with a price and offer to pay cash if possible.

I hope I can keep the date. It all depends on whether or not I can book hall for that day. FH isn't too excited about visiting halls but I did talk him into seeing 5 on Saturday. I hope I find the right one.

Re: How does one Negotiate ?
I didn't negotiate at first...we looked around a bit and then I called up EastWind and told them how much I loved the place, but that some of the numbers were scaring me (I called and left a message on Sunday night and John got back to me Monday morning!!!) John asked me what I would be comfortable with and then went to ask his boss. He got back to me that afternoon and was very helpful. THe following week we went for a tasting and my Dad got some extras thrown in. Honestly, just try, the worst that can happen is that they say no, but you won't know until you try. Good Luck!

Re: How does one Negotiate ?
I went to about 8 halls and they were all willing to negotiate except The Watermill. Jericho Terrace and Chatea La Mer really helped me out.
I basically got a starting price from each place and then took the prices around saying, Im going with whos the lowest an so far___ is lower. Can you beat it? If not Im going to have to go there because I simply cant afford not to.
It worked and I had an INCREDIBLE wedding!
Good luck!

Re: How does one Negotiate ?
pay cash...be flexible with your date..pick a friday or sunday...if the place won't budge with the price...you can either walk away or get them to lower the minimum and have them throw in a lot more stuff for the price
