How far in advance did everyone order their invitations?

My mom is telling me that I shouldnt be looking for them in January because if I find one I want to order it would be too early to order them. She says I should wait till at least March.

We are getting married in February.. I ordered mine in October, they were ready in 1 week, then we picked them up, got all of the addresses together, sent them to the calligrapher which took about 2 weeks and we just sent them out over the past weekend.. i would say about 4 months before the wedding.. You will want to mail them about 6-8 weeks before the wedding.. So you should try and purchase them about 2 months before that. this way you give yourself sometime to get them together, get names and addresses and if you are having them printed, give yourself time for that.
